Infogrames to Complete Takeover of Atari

France’s Infogrames Entertainment has announced it plans to acquire the remainder of venerable video game developer Atari for just $11 million. Infogrames already owns just over 51 percent of Atari’s stock, and has been publishing games under the Atari name since 2001. The takeover will yield $1.68 per share to Atari shareholders, assuming they approve the deal.

"Bringing Atari US and Infogrames businesses together will enable us to create a simplified global structure for our business as we seek to re-build a well-managed, cohesive and financially disciplined company," said Infogrames CEO David Gardner in a statement.

Neverwinter Nights 2 Comes to Stores

Game publisher Atari has announced that Neverwinter Nights 2 has shipped to U.S. retailers. The game, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, takes role-players back to the embattled city of Neverwinter, set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, and offers extensive new single-player play with deep character development and powerful new features to let players create their own universes, quests, and stories.

“Obsidian has delivered an outstanding sequel to one of the most beloved RPGs of all time,” said Nique Fajors, Atari’s VP of sales and marketing. “Neverwinter Nights 2 offers a deeply satisfying role-playing experience and a robust toolset that together will extend the life of the Neverwinter tales and bring more members to the community.”

Atari Announces E3 Game Slate

Video game maker Atari has unveiled nine new titles it will be showcasing at the E3 Expo next week in Los Angeles. On the slate:

  • Alone in the Dark, for Xbox 360 and Windows, updates the horror-gaming franchise with new physics and environmental interaction.
  • Arthur and the Minimoys, for Windows, Playstation 2, PSP, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance, ties in with Luc Besson’s upcoming animated film, and enables players to relive the adventures of Arthur, Betameche, and Princess Selenia as they try to save the Minimoys’ world.
  • Battlezone

Atari Releases Act of Treason Sequel

Atari today unveiled a sequel to their well regarded PC real time strategy game Act of Treason: Direct Action. Dubbed Act of Treason: High Treason, this sequel is available for immediate purchase and download through IGN’s Direct2Drive service. Those wanting the boxed version will need to wait until May.

In Act of Treason: High Treason, said Atari, players trudge through a new 34 mission single player campaign across future battlefields located all over the world, with optional multiplayer modes for group game play. New features in this sequel include 35 additional units and upgrades, modern naval combat, mercenary units, an improved control system, revised aircraft and artillery and new maps set in a new real-world location.

Tycoon City: New York Goes Gold

Tycoon City: New York Goes Gold

Video game publisher Atari yesterday announced that Tycoon City: New York had gone gold, meaning it is scheduled to ship to stores nationwide on Feb. 21. The game was developed by Deep Red Games and will be available for Windows based computers.

Tycoon City: New York, Atari said, places players in the role of an entrepreneur who has dreams of becoming a building a business empire. Features of the game will allow players to create, upgrade and customize over 100 types of businesses such as a nightclub, Broadway theater and more. Authentic New York neighborhoods, landmarks and consumer brands are in the game to help add a true NYC flair.

New Driver: Parallel Lines Details Given

Atari today revealed more details on their upcoming Driver: Parallel Lines Hollywood style action driving game. The game is currently set for release on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox video game systems in spring 2006.

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3: Soaked! Floats

It’s virtually wet. It’s virtually wild. It’s the announcement from Atari that the first expansion pack of their popular RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, titled “Soaked!”, will be washing into store shelves on June 21. This $29.99 add-on will allow theme park tycoons to create and control their own water parks.

“Soaked!”, according to an Atari press release, offers players more than 50 new rides and coasters, many of which are built around a water park theme, including swimming pool complexes, water slides, wave pools and interactivity with water, including stirring up swimming pools, firing water cannons at park guests and a brand new interactive water-based coaster called The Roller Soaker! New Swimming Pool and Waterfall Designers will enable players to add hundreds of enhancements and the RCT3 MixMaster has been expanded to allow players to customize laser light, firework and water shows using the player’s own music library.

Atari Classics Come To Nintendo DS

“Some of gamers’ favorite classics are getting tagged for the 21st century by some of the most talented graffiti artists in the world,” said Wim Stocks, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Atari. “With its blend of old school addictive gameplay and new school artistry and technology, Retro Atari Classics is the must have game for all Nintendo DS gamers, young and old.”

Retro Atari Classics will feature 10 original Atari games, including Pong, Missile Command, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Tempest, Warlords, Gravitar, Lunar Lander and Sprint. Each title will be playable in its original form as well as in the all new “Tagged” mode, featuring brand new looks from some of today’s most popular graffiti artists, including REAS, Delta and Obey Giant.

Sony Fills In Details On PSP Gaming System

Taking the number of third-party Japanese publishers backing the machine to 59 are the likes of Eidos KK, Jaleco, Atari Japan, Ubisoft Entertainment Japan, Imagineer and Titus Japan.

Consequently, a number of new PSP gaming titles have also been announced. Amongst the most exciting (or at least more familiar) to Western audiences include Sony’s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Konami’s World Soccer Winning Eleven series, Natsume’s underrated Harvest Moon series, Atari’s Transformers spin-off, a Sony horse-riding game called Derby and confirmation of EA’s Need for Speed: Underground.

Atari Disposes Of Oddworld Investment

A regulatory filing by publisher Atari has revealed that the company has ended its relationship with Munch’s Oddysee developer Oddworld Inhabitants, handing its 50 per cent share in the company back in return for a chunk of publishing royalties.

In fact, this transaction – which brings to an end a partnership between Atari and Oddworld Inhabitants which began when Infogrames, as then was, took a 50 per cent stake in the developer for $7.1 million back in 1996 – took place at the end of last year, but has only just been revealed through the filing of a document with the American Securities and Exchange Commission.
