Chipmaker AMD has introduced a set of eight new Athlon II processors, aimed at improving the company’s profile in low-cost and low-power computing markets—and that includes consumer desktop and notebook systems. Although the new chips will not take top honors for raw performance, the new offers do include a set of triple-core CPUs and dual-, triple-, and quad-core chips that run at a low 45 watts.

AMD Shrinks Athlon CPUs to 65nm
Chipmaker AMD is doing its best to take some air of Intel’s sails by announcing the immediate availability o Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processors built using a 65nm process. the new processors are essentially AMD’s existing Athlon 64 line scaled down from their original 90nm scale: the smaller size means AMD can manufacture more chips per wafer, and each chip offers better performance per watt of power.
AMD: Two Cores are Better Than One
AMD says the new dual core Athlon 64 X2 delivers performance improvements of up to 80 percent on select digital media and productivity applications compared to single-core AMD Athlon 64 processors.
The AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor will be supported by OEMs such as Acer, Alienware, HP and Lenovo, as well as more than 40 leading system-builder partners worldwide.
According to the company “Digital media applications can see an average of a 34 percent increase compared to similar single-core AMD Athlon 64 processors, while overall productivity benchmark results can see a 22 percent average increase.”
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Previews
“The Athlon X2 is specifically built for a more involved computer user, one that heavily multitasks or uses their computer for digital content creation such as video editing. This is the same marketing strategy we saw Intel use at their dual core processor launch, but I think that AMD has done a better job at defining the segment with less confusing marketing. What you will find on the following pages though, is that AMD’s Athlon 64 X2 fully blurs segment lines with its solid gaming performance. In fact, if you are a gamer that would truly like to multitask, this may the first time you have ever had that option.”

AMD To Market Low Power, Low Cost Chip
Sempron will be sold worldwide. AMD did not provide any technical details or specify whether the chip would derive from the older Duron/Athlon/Athlon XP line or the Athlon 64 line.
Generally, the budget chips share the same basic processor core as the more expensive models, but they run slower, come with slower buses and have less performance-enhancing cache.
