Indie Games Showcased At The IGF Awards

We hear all about the big blockbuster games that sell millions of copies. But there’s a whole ecosystem of independent games, too, that receive very little publicity – except for the one night in the year when they step into the spotlight for the Independent Games Festival Awards.

How big is this world? Well, this year saw 226 games in competition for awards, with another 145 chasing the student prize. That’s a lot of games. According to the BBC, Steve Swink of Flashbang Studios told the audience:

"The world is catching on. Game journalists, industry and yes players are beginning to appreciate indie games."

Call Of Duty 4 Big Golden Joystick Winner

The people at Activision, the publishers of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, were very happy on Thursday night. At the annual British Golden Joystick Awards, CoD4 scooped the Nuts All-Nighter Award, ESA PC Game of the Year, GamesRadar.com Online Game of the Year and Virgin Media Ultimate Game of the Year.

Unlike the other big British game awards, the Baftas, the Golden Joysticks winners are chosen by the public, not experts, and this year 850,000 people voted, according to the BBC.

Gears of War took home honors for technology and visual arts, as well as the coveted "best game" award.

However, other video game developers weren’t exactly left in the cold. Clover Studio and Capcom’s Okami combination nature/adventure game took top prizes for character design and innovation, and Nintendo’s Wii Sports earned prizes for game design and innovation. Nintendo’s Shigero Miyamoto also received a Lifetime Achievement award; his contributions to the medium include iconic titles like the Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda franchises.

Microsoft To Pay California Lawyers $113M

“The award for fees and costs comes in a case in which Microsoft agreed to allocate $1.1 billion for California consumers–after a small San Francisco law firm sued in state court here alleging the company inflated prices by monopolizing the pre-installed software market from 1995 to 2001.

The deal enables anyone who bought a computer in California to get vouchers worth $5 to $29 per Microsoft product. Two-thirds of the unused settlement is earmarked for poor California schools.

The attorneys who sued Microsoft here had requested $258 million in fees and costs, up to $3,000 an hour for one of the lead attorneys, Eugene Crew of San Francisco. “
