Microsoft Denies Xbox Blu-ray, Zune Phone

Microsoft Denies Xbox Blu-ray, Zune Phone

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, the president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division again re-iterated Microsoft’s stance on two topics that just won’t seem to go away: the Xbox 360 game console getting a Blu-ray drive, and Microsoft producing a Zune phone.

On the topic a Zune phone, Bach was very clear: Microsoft already sells 3G mobile phone technology, and it’s called Windows Mobile. Bach—who also manages Microsoft’s Windows Mobile hardware group—sees the growth of the smartphone market as a tremendous opportunity for Microsoft, and predicts Windows Mobile devices will outsell the iPhone and the BlackBerry. But Microsoft itself doesn’t make phones, and has no intention of getting in to the handset business. Instead, it aims to provide the software platform with which phone makers can create different handsets that appeal to different types of users.

Zune Hits the One Million Mark

Zune Hits the One Million Mark

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, says the company has managed to sell “a little over a million Zunes,”—and claims the company’s device has a 10 percent share of the hard-disk based media player category.

In comparison, Apple’s iPod—which has admittedly been on the market much longer than the Zune—recently celebrated its 100 millionth sale, and reported sales of over 10.5 million iPods during its most recent fiscal quarter.

Microsoft introduced the Zune media player in November, 2006.

Microsoft Taking Long View with Zune

At its annual day-long meeting for financial analysts in Redmond yesterday, Microsoft executives tried to put positive spins on its current business directions, attempting to allay concerns Windows Vista will arrive late and be adopted slowly and that Software as a Service (SaaS) is a viable business model for the future. And Microsoft also revealed it doesn’t expect it’s forthcoming line of Zune digital media devices to swiftly conquer the market, leaving all others trembling in fear. It also declined to show or demonstrate a Zune device to analysts: a surprise, considering Microsoft says it will reach the U.S. market this fall.

Microsoft Denies Xbox 2 Showing At GDC

A senior Microsoft Europe executive responded to increasing speculation that it will launch its successor to Xbox at the San Jose show by saying: “It’s fair to say we won’t be announcing a hardware platform at GDC”.

This news will come as a blow to those expecting that the show would mirror the role played by the event four years ago, when MS chief Bill Gates emerged on stage decked out in an Xbox baseball jacket to herald the company’s arrival in the console market.

Microsoft Game Studio Exec Resigns

The veteran Microsoft executive who headed the company’s push into console video game software and is credited with launching hits like the PC favorite “Flight Simulator” and “Halo” for the Xbox has resigned, Microsoft said on Tuesday.

Ed Fries, who joined Microsoft in 1985 as an intern, had headed the company’s game studio since 1995 and was responsible for cementing key relationships with game software publishers when Microsoft introduced its Xbox video game console.

Robbie Bach, senior vice president of Microsoft’s games division, said that Fries had resigned to pursue other opportunities but might return to the video game business and possibly in some future alliance with Microsoft.
