Cable operator Comcast has announced that its rollout of DOCSIS 3.0-based wideband services that offers Internet connectivity at up to 12 Mbps—and a whopping 50 Mbps downstream in some places—is now complete across 30 percent of its network footprint, and the company anticipates the rollout will be available across 65 percent of its network by the end of 2009. The company says the wideband capability is now available to more than 15 million home and businesses, including ten major markets like Chicgao, Portland, Seattle, Baltimore, Boston, Atlanta, the Twin Cities, and Philadelphia, among others.

Ericsson Predicts Wi-Fi’s Days are Numbered
Speaking at the European Computer Audit, Control and Security Conference in Stockholm, Ericsson’s chief marketing officer Johan Bergendahl predicted the days of Wi-Fi hotspots are numbered as mobile broadband technologies become consumers’ preferred method for accessing information and the Internet. Bergendahl noted mobile broadband is growing faster in Europe than cell phones or traditional phone service ever did, and likened the current proliferation of Wi-Fi hotspots to phone booths—things that used to be ubiquitous on every corner, but are a rare sight nowadays.
SC Bandwidth Challenge 05
SC 05 is the sixth annual bandwidth challenge, and is being held on November 12-18th in Seattle Washington. The contest challenges scientists and network engineers alike to innovate new and advanced techniques to push massive amounts of data to networked computers. It also features the latest in networking technology itself.
The key to the challenge not only is to move data, but to show a meaningful leap in networking technology.
“To win the Bandwidth Challenge, our innovative scientists and networking gurus not only stretch the bounds of network capacity, they stretch their imaginations to envision a future where colossal bandwidth resources are indispensable to scientific collaboration and discovery,” said Debbie Montano, SC 05 Bandwidth Challenge Chair.
