Sprint Lights Up WiMax in Baltimore

Sprint Lights Up WiMax in Baltimore

Telecommunications operator Sprint has officially launched its Xohm 4G WiMax wireless data network in Baltimore, Maryland, with additional rollouts planning in other markets scheduled to come online as Sprint builds out a promised nationwide network—Washington D.C. and Chicago should be next followed by Dallas-Ft. Wroth, Boston, Providence, and Philadelphia.

“This is truly an historic day with the birth of a completely new Internet-based business model that alters the dynamics of the traditional telecom industry,” said Sprint’s president for the Xohm business unit Barry West, in a statement. “Wireless consumers will experience WiMAX device and XOHM service innovation on multiple levels as the computer, Internet, telecom, and consumer electronics industries converge to redefine wireless mobility.”

Sprint and Samsung has announced that the companies have completed commercial acceptance testing on Sprint’s Xohm WiMax mobile broadband offering, and the network is now “ready” for the launch of commercial services. However, Sprint still hasn’t offered any details as to when WiMax service might actually roll out to consumers outside of network trial areas: the official line remains “later this year.”

Completing commercial acceptance testing “is a major step towards launch readiness and Sprint is extremely pleased with the performance of the mobile WiMAX network and access devices from Samsung,” said Xohmn president Barry West, in a statement. “The collaboration with Samsung and our other partners has created a WiMax ecosystem that has now proven that it can deliver this new technology to the marketplace well ahead of any feasible alternative.”

U.S. telecommunications operator Sprint says that the company is on track to soft-launch its next-generation WiMax wireless data service, dubbed Xohm this April, and announced portal and device partnerships designed to bolster the service. Nonetheless, the company was greeted with some raised eyebrows at CES where it was only able to show two computer modems that will be available when the Xohm network comes online, although the company expects about 10 devices to be available at launch, followed by a barrage of consumer devices will become available over time.

Mobile operator Sprint announced it is teaming with Internet giant Google to develop a new mobile Internt portal for customer using high-speed WiMAX Internet access. The new portal will provide search, communications, and social networking capabilities, including access to Google Apps (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk), as well as location-based services, on-demand services (including music, video, and TV) and new mobile applications.

“Google and Sprint will optimize the Internet experience for the digital lifestyle,” said Barry West, Sprint’s president for 4G Mobile Broadband, in a release. “This collaboration brings what will be the best mobile Internet network together with the leading Internet search company. It allows us to capitalize on the powerful mobility and Internet trends, and create wireless services and applications that take advantage of each company’s history of product development innovation.”
