How Do Spammers Make Money?

How Do Spammers Make Money?

We all hate spam, and it keeps on coming. But just how do spammers make money, and is it the fabled millions people have claimed? A new study carried out earlier this year by computer scientists from University of California, Berkeley and UC, San Diego saw the seven-strong team hijack part of the Storm botnet to discover the answers, according to the BBC.

They created several “proxy bots” between the Storm control system and hijacked PCs, and used them to control 75,869 computers, then created their own fake spam which was sent out.

Logitech Acquires SightSpeed for $30M

Swiss-owned hardware manufacturer Logitech padded out the software side of its operation on Wednesday with the acquisition of SightSpeed, a company that offers video conferencing applications. The company laid out approximately $30 million in cash to seal the deal, which will wrap up after customary closing conditions in November.

“With this acquisition, we are significantly augmenting our current video R&D resources to help us move more quickly toward our goals for video services that complement the way people socialize, communicate and enjoy entertainment,” said Junien Labrousse, executive vice president of Logitech’s Products group, in a statement.

Clouds Ahead for IBM and Google

Clouds Ahead for IBM and Google

The future is in parallel computing. So say the CEOs of both IBM and Google, who are converting their shared vision into a huge investment in college campuses to strengthen student understanding of the technology.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that the companies would sink between $20 million and $25 million into hardware, software and services in parallel computing resources for college campuses. The reason: both say computer science schools underprepare students for dealing with the technology, which they predict will become increasingly important.

UC Berkeley Puts Free Lectures on YouTube

UC Berkeley Puts Free Lectures on YouTube

For college students who have ever wasted time cruising for videos on YouTube when they should have been studying, there’s now an easy compromise: going to class on YouTube. The University of California at Berkeley became the very first college to offer lectures on YouTube when it announced the UC Berkeley channel on Wednesday.

YouTubers can now attend 300 lectures on everything from biology to nonviolence, completely free of charge. The video lessons aren’t intended explicitly for enrolled students – UC Berkeley wants to share them with whoever finds the content interesting. “YouTube’s ongoing innovations create a great environment in which students and lifelong learners alike can discover, watch and share educational videos,” said Ben Hubbard, manager of special events and video services, in a statement.

Are Facebook Members Higher Achievers?

Are Facebook Members Higher Achievers?A new study shows that which social networking site you use can help show your social status.   According to research by PhD student Danah Boyd from the School of Information Sciences at UC Berkeley, Facebook users comes from homes with a higher income and are more likelyto attend college. By contract, Myspace users usually go straight to work following high school and don’t pursue a degree.   Boyd’s researchalso shows that Facebook users largely tend to be white and belong to families that push them toward college.   “They are in honors classes, looking forward to the prom, and live in aworld dictated by after school activities.” Boyd has written in a preliminary draft of her study. She found many teens from minorities using MySpace, and added that “MySpace has most ofthe kids who are socially ostracised at school because they are geeks, freaks, or queers.”   In her research, she concludes that people use social networking sites to build a sense ofcommunity. Often, she claims, teens have strong opinions about the social networks they don’t use.

P2P Comes To Aid Relief

There’s a new P2P network coming. But it won’t be file-sharing this time. The new iCare network, invented by a pair of UC Berkeley students, will make for a much faster flow of disaster relief in the United States.   Anand Kulkarni and Ephrat Bitton, both working on their PhDs,were inspired by Hurricane Katrina and its nightmare aftermath. Communications were virtually impossible, and the logistics of relief became a nightmare in New Orleans.   Under their iCaresystem, which is currently in development, it would be come much easier to pair needs and supplies so survivors of disasters can start to reassemble their lives.   Survivors would list theirneeds, using cell phones or computers in aid centers. The system would then automatically send their requests to companies or organizations with the supplies to fill them. Maps showing the locationsof victims are built into the system.   Of course, that’s only half the battle – the other part is delivery. However, iCare will have an algorithm program to find free space ontrucks owned by companies that have signed up, and which will be go into the affected areas. Not only that, the program will be able to plot the fastest route for the driver to drop off the supplieswhere needed.   “There’s a massive desire on the part of the public to help after disasters, and they just need a good way to transform that desire into something tangible for thevictims,” said Kulkarni.   The plan isn’t for iCare to go it alone, but co-ordinate with existing agencies on aid relief.
