Bing Travel and Kayak, Separated At Birth?

Are they twins under the skin? Online travel service Kayak has complained to Microsoft that its Bing travel service has a look eerily similar to Kayak, and that might confuse potential customers.

Kayak’s chief marketing officer Robert Birge told Wired.com:

"We have contacted them through official channels about concerns about the similarities between Bing and Kayak. From the look and feel of their travel product, they seem to agree with our approach to the market."

Microsoft confirmed that Kayak had been in touch, and said to The Register:

Although it’s probably too early to say whether Microsoft’s new search service Bing will gain any significant traction in the Internet community in the long term—after all, Live Search was touted as a game-changer when it came out, too!—StatCounter is claiming that initial interest in Bing has already propelled it to the number-two search engine in both U.S. and world markets. According to StatCounter, Bing surged forwarded in the U.S. market to account for 16.28 percent of the search market on Thursday, June 4—and it grabbed that share mostly from Google, which dropped to a mere 71.47 percent share of the search market.

For years Microsoft has been playing third fiddle to Yahoo and (of course) Google in the Internet search arena, with MSN Search and Live Search failing to gain much traction with Internet users worldwide despite prominent placement within Microsoft’s applications and operating systems. Now, Microsoft is throwing down another gauntlet in the search game with Bing, a new Internet search service that’s intended not only to help users find things, but will also offer tools and features via new “Decision Engine” technology to help users immediately make use of the information they find. Out of the gate, Bing will focus on four main tasks—helping users plan a trip, research a health condition, find a local business, or make a purchase.
