Sony HDTVs Now Come with a Side of Meatballs

cloudy-posterIn a bid to sell living room electronics and spur buzz for “Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs,” Sony Corp. is offering the movie for free to U.S. buyers of its Internet-connected TVs and Blu-ray players starting Monday.

People who buy that equipment will be able to watch the movie in any 24-hour window from Dec. 8 until it is released on DVD and Blu-ray disc on Jan. 5.

Sony’s move highlights the way that movies are increasingly becoming available on TVs that connect directly to the Internet as the entertainment industry strives to come up with new business models.

The closures include 380 to 425 "normal" store closures slated for 2009 and 2010, along with an additional 430 to 535 "accelerated" store closures over the same period—with the bulk of the accelerated closers slated for 2009. In addition, Blockbuster is eyeing converting some full-fledged stores into outlets; all told, as nearly 1,600 Blockbuster locations may close or change their status by the end of 2010.

Samsung Inks Deal with Blockbuster for OnDemand Video

Video rental firm Blockbuster might have been late to get into mail-order rentals and online streaming, but the company is certainly trying to give rival Netflix a run for its money: Blockbuster and Samsung have announced that new Samsung HDTVs, home theater systems, and Blu-ray players will be able to access Blockbuster’s OnDemand video library via the Internet. Products supporting the service will launch in the fall of 2009 (we’re assuming northern hemisphere, here). Owners of selected Samsung Seris 650 LCD and plasma TVs as well as Series 7000 LCD HDTVs and above will be able to get the service via a firmware upgrade; some existing Blu-ray player and home theater systems will also be upgradable.

Blockbuster May Shut Some Retail Stores

In a filing with the Security and Exchange Commission, video rental chain Blockbuster, the company admits economic hard times and a tight financial situation have raised “substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern”—and the company might be forced to close some of its retail locations in order to cut costs and make ends meet. The company recently took out another $250 million in credit—on top of an existing debt of $780.9 million—in an effort to shore up its bottom line: the new debt comes to term September 30, 2010.

Blockbuster OnDemand Movies Coming to TiVo

DVR pioneer TiVo has been offering its customers access to streaming video content using in-home broadband Internet for a while: the company first partnered up with Amazon and then partnered with video rental powerhouse Netflix—and added high-definition video from Netflix shortly thereafter. TiVo also partnered up with CinemaNow to bring Disney movies to subscribers…and now the company is adding another streaming video partner to its service: Blockbuster. TiVo has announced plans to offer Blockbuster OnDemand on TiVo Series3, TiVo HD XL, and older Series2 set-top boxes in the second half of 2009—and Blockbuster is going to help promote TiVo by offering TiVos for sale in its extensive brick-and-mortal rental locations.

The MediaPoint box is developed by 2Wire, comes with integrated Wi-Fi and Ethernet for connecting to a home broadband connection, and delivers DVD-quality video.

With video game sales breaking records in recent months and the high-profile release of Grand Theft Auto IV just around the corner, Blockbuster has announced that it will significantly expand its game business. "We’re committed to offering a full assortment of everything gamers want in our stores – hardware, accessories and retail and rental games across all platforms,” said Rod Murray, Blockbuster’s vice-president of games merchandising, in a statement.
