Hacker Posts Data On Six Million Chileans

Hacker Posts Data On Six Million Chileans

A Chilean computer hacker decided he had to show just how insecure confidential government records are in his country. So he hacked into government servers for the military, the education ministry and the electoral service, amassing confidential data of six million Chileans, then posted it to a technology blog, according to newspaper El Mercurio.

The data covered everything from addresses and phone numbers to educational records and ID card numbers. The administrators of the Chilean technology blog removed it immediately, along with the message from the hacker explaining why he’d done it, and contacted authorities.

Google’s New Blog Invites Comments

Google’s New Blog Invites CommentsGoogle has started up a new corporate blog, but it’s one with a difference – this blog is opento comments from outsiders. Google already has several blogs, covering technical issues and also serving as conduits for giving information on corporate policy, but these have all been one-wayoutward traffic.   The new blog deals with public policy. Its intention is to give insights into the company corporate thought processes to global policy makers. The audience for this blog are“legislators, ministers, governors, city councilmembers, regulators and the staffers who support them,” according to Andrew McLaughlin, Google’s director of public policy and governmentaffairs.   It’s certainly brought immediate reaction, not all of it positive about Google’s policies. There has been criticism of the company’s data retention policy, itsco-operation with the Chinese government and it’s deal with Doubleclick.   But the company welcomes that kind of dialogue. The blog’s aim is to “foster free expression, promoteeconomic growth, expand access to information, enable innovation and protect consumers,” McLaughlin said.   The company says this is the first step to opening up all their blogs to two-wayinteraction.

Amazon Launches One Blog to Rule Them All

Amazon Launches One Blog to Rule Them All

About the same time Google was killing off Froogle Amazon, the big online bookseller, was killing off one of their online offerings as well. The Amazon Plog, which was a "personalized, targeted blog based on your purchases", was eliminated by Amazon and replaced by a new blog with an easier to remember name.

The Amazon Daily Blog, as described by an Amazon employee, is an evolution of Amazon’s blogging platform and something which will be available to all Amazon visitors regardless of whether or not they register. This new blog draws content off of other Amazon editorial blogs amassed around the giant online retailer’s Web site to create one single repository from which Amazon shoppers can get their news.

Blogosphere Growth Slowing

Social media site Technorati used to publish “State of the Blogosphere” reports, looking at blogging numbers, practices, and trends. Now Technorati has renamed the reports “State of the Live Web” to better address popular social networking and interactive media types found on the Web&mdahs;and the move may have come just in time as the growth of blogging is showing strong signs of leveling off.

China Shutters More Blogs

The Chinese government has shut down at least three more blogs just as its parliament begins a 10-day session in Beijing.

The satirical blog of journalist Wang Xiaofeng, dubbed “Massage Cream,” covered a variety of topics, from the Chinese state-run media to Beijing slag, often with implicit jibes at the ruling Communist party. The site had drawn more than 10 million visitors; a message from the blog hosting company now pointedly reads “Because of unavoidable reasons known to all, this blog is now temporarily closed.”

And How Does Blogging Make You Feel?

A new "Blog Trends Survey," conducted for online giant America Online July 17 to 22, 2005 through Opinion Place by Digital Marketing Services found that most bloggers aren’t hanging shingles as wanna-be cyber-journalists, political activists, or covering news. Instead, nearly half surveyed bloggers say they use the online journals as a form of therapy, writing about personal issues and events.

Blog Visitors Grow

Research firm comScore Networks, at the request of blogging companies Six Apart and Gawker Media, has just announced the results of a survey detailing blog visits during the first quarter of this year. The results show a 45 percent in traffic from the same time last year.

comScore’s numbers, published in this PDF report, found that nearly 50 million Americans, or around 30 percent of the total U.S. Internet population, visited blogs during the time measured. Other key findings include four individual blogs each having more than 1 million visitors, the top blog categories being political and lifestyle, that blog readers tend to be young and wealthy and that blog readers visit nearly twice as many web pages as the Internet average.

Blogging Can Threaten Enterprises

Blogging is rapidly emerging as a threat to Internet users. A blog (short for weblog) is a personal journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or reflect the purpose of the Web site that hosts the blog. While blogs have a legitimate use, online journals pose serious threats to enterprise confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Blogs are potentially contributory to regulatory non-compliance in that blogs may not be documented communications and may also violate privacy considerations.

Mac blog leads to Microsoft layoff

Earlier this week, he posted at his personal blog site a picture of G5 Macs being unloaded near the MSCopy building. Shortly thereafter, Microsoft terminated Hanscom’s employment contract.

Microsoft’s reaction may seem a tad harsh. The company does have a Mac Business Unit, which produces software for Apple computers. It’s no shocker that Redmond would want some of Apple’s latest and greatest kit. Clearly, however, the company did not like a temp worker eyeing its loading docks and then running home to blog about it to strangers.
