Sony Buys MGM For Close To $5 Billion

” The nearly five-billion-dollar investment with consortium partners is unlikely immediately to boost Sony’s sluggish core consumer electronics business but is part of a long-term strategy, theysaid.

Yoshimasa Maruyama, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute, said Sony’s Hollywood expansion underlined its push to establish the Blu-ray disc as the DVD of choice for future releases. “

Sony’s consumer electronics arm has been struggling lately with losses posted for the past few quarters. What better way is there to push Blu-ray technology than to have complete control over which movies are released on the up-and-coming new technology.

MPEG-4 AVC Codec Added To Blu-Ray Spec

“With the addition of the MPEG-4 AVC High-Profile codec, we are offering content owners maximum functionality and flexibility for their high-definition packaged media,” said Blu-ray Disc spokesperson Maureen Weber, general manager of HP’s Optical Storage Solutions Business. “This is just one more example of Blu-ray Disc’s commitment to be the best medium for high-definition packaged media.”

Video codecs are used to compress video images for storage to a disc and then decompress them for viewing. DVD Forum Backs HD-DVD Over Blu-ray

The working group WG-11, under the Technical Coordination Group (TCG) of the DVD Forum recently visited leading manufacturers of DVD drives and discs in Taiwan, with the goal of winning their support for HD-DVD, a next-generation DVD format promoted by Toshiba and NEC, according to the Taiwanese makers.

Blu-ray Disc provides up to 50 GB on a dual layer, single sided disc, which equals about 5 hours of high definition video content. Blu-ray Disc will offer the largest capacity on a blue laser based optical disc and will enable to deliver new applications such as interactive services to consumers.

Toshiba, NEC rally support for HD-DVD

HD-DVD backers at the press event, who also included disc replicators Cinram and Memory-Tech, said the advantages of their format compared to the rival Blu-ray Disc include the use of two bonded discs with a data layer 0.6mm below the surface. This will allow for more cost-effective read/write optics and will enable current manufacturing equipment to be used for HD-DVD.

The HD-DVD discs also will not require caddies to protect the media from fingerprints or scratches. This would enable easy integration with PCs, particularly slim-drives required for notebooks. Blu-ray disc backers also claim that their prerecorded media
