JVC has announced (quite briefly, actually) its latest Blu-ray player today—the new JVC XV-BP11. This Blu-ray player offers playback of high definition Blu-ray discs, plus playback of the AVCHD format—the high definition format widely used for HD camcorders—and it is retailing for $199.95. The ultra-thin XV-BP11 is also equipped with HDMI 1.3 video composite, a USB socket and is compatible with a number of audio formats.
JVC describes its new Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player as a “truly versatile high definition player,” and attributes the convenience of the device to features like the “cinema zoom (x16), parental lock, and its slim design.”
Folks who have to archive serious amounts of content pour a lot of money into hard drives—but in many cases it would be handy to be able to move some of that content to less-expensive media, like Blu-ray discs. One problem, of course, is that burning to Blu-ray is much slower than writing to hard drives…plus, in the case of video content, you can’t pop hard drives into many consumer disc players.
What you see is no longer what you get. With the advent of Blu-ray Profile 2.0, also known as BD-Live, the content pressed onto a disc when it leaves the factory no longer represents the limit of the experience. A live Internet connection allows Profile 2.0 players to deliver extra content through the Web: everything from trivia games and extra clips to mini games. And to really take advantage of the Internet connectivity that these players carry, many manufacturers have pushed the limits even further, packing compatibility with Netflix streaming, YouTube, Pandora and other online content into the same boxes.
