Major Microsoft Announcement on the Way

Major Microsoft Announcement on the Way

In a surprise move on Thursday, Microsoft sent out word to the press to prepare for a “significant” morning announcement via teleconference. Although the release did not include details on what the surprise announcement would address, it did rule out the possibility that it would be related to Microsoft’s recent failed bid to acquire Yahoo.

Attendees will include Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, chief software architect Ray Ozzie, senior vice president of the server and tools business Bob Muglia, and the company’s general counsel for legal and corporate affairs, Brad Smith.

Microsoft Permits Vista Virtualization

A year after the release of Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft has decided to ease restrictions that forced used to buy the Business or Ultimate Editions of the operating systems if they (legally) wanted to run Vista in a virtualized environment. Effective immediately, Vista’s Basic and Home Premium editions are now licensed for use in virtual environments—a boon to Mac and Linux users who want to occasionally dip into the Vista operating system, and even a benefit to Windows users looking to set up virtualized machines for testing, backup, and other uses. Microsoft has updated its license terms for the Basic and Home Premium editions to reflect the change.

Silverlight Lights Microsoft’s Web Way

Silverlight Lights Microsoft

Microsoft today unveiled a competitor to the popular Adobe Flash Web media player at the 2007 National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas. This new solution for video and interactivity on Mac- and Windows-based Web browsers is being called Silverlight.

Silverlight, according to Microsoft, is designed for quick installation to Web browsers and " integrates with existing Web technologies and assets to provide higher-quality experiences with lower costs for media delivery." This Microsoft technology, previously called  Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere, has garnered the support of some pretty heavy hitters in the media company arena. These companies include Akamai Technologies Inc., Brightcove Inc., Eyeblaster Inc., Limelight Networks, Major League Baseball and Netflix Inc.

Microsoft Scales Back Longhorn Features

Advanced search features that Gates has termed the “Holy Grail” of Longhorn, the next major version of Windows, won’t be fully in place until 2009, Bob Muglia, the senior vice president in charge of Windows server development, told CNET News.com.

The technology, called WinFS, is an add-on the Windows file system that Microsoft says will make it easier for users to find data such as documents, e-mail messages and multimedia files–no matter what their format–on local PCs and across the network.
