Boingo Signs In to McDonald’s Wi-Fi

Boingo Signs In to McDonald

Customers might be coming into McDonald’s for more than the special sauce, lately: in a new deal with Wayport, subscribers to the Boingo Wi-Fi hotspot networks will be able to surf the Internet via Wi-Fi from more than 9,000 McDonald’s restaurants in the United States. The deal puts the total number of hotspots accessible to Boingo subscribers over 100,000; Boingo aggregates hotspots operated by more than 150 Wi-Fi operators.

“We are very pleased to expand our long-standing roaming access relationship with Boingo to include McDonald’s,” said Wayport CEO Dave Vucina. “This new agreement both strengthens our commitment to our neutral host strategy as we drive incremental customers to our partner venues like McDonald’s, which is a perfect digital destination based on its ubiquity and accessibility.”

Boingo Offers Flat-rate, Worldwide Wi-Fi

Boingo Offers Flat-rate, Worldwide Wi-Fi

Wireless hotspot operator Boingo has introduced Boingo Global, a new flatrate pricing plan which gives users access to more than 100,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world for $39 a month.

“The days of per-minute charges and incremental roaming fees for Wi-Fi Internet access are over,” said Dave Hagan, Boingo’s president and CEO, in a release. “Traveling for business is hard enough without having to watch the clock while you’re trying to be productive.”

The worldwide, flat-rate plan may go a long way towards increasing Boingo’s appeal to U.S. and Canadian users who travel abroad: Boingo has long offered a $22/month flat rate plan within the U.S. and Canada, but international service was often metered, sometimes at unpredictable rates.

Boingo Offers Roaming on Fon Wi-Fi Network

Wireless hotspot operator Boingo has announced a deal with the Madrid-based wireless network Fon to enable Boingo users to roam on Fon’s Wi-Fi network. Boingo already combined access to Wi-Fi hotspots operated by over 150 operators, many of which provide wireless Internet access at businesses, restaurants, airports, and other locations. The Fon network, which is built out by "foneros" who share unused broadband access in exchange for being able to connect to the Internet via hotspots operated by other foneros, conversely tends to have hotspots where Boingo-affiliated operators can be stretched thin, like residential areas.

Boingo Opens Up to Mobile Wi-Fi

The problem of having a Wi-Fi enabled wireless device like a smartphone or PDA is that most Wi-Fi hotspots are designed to let users sign on with a notebook computer—and that’s particularly true if you’re a frequent traveler and you’re trying to guarantee yourself Internet access by signing on to a Wi-Fi network service.

Boingo Expands Wireless Airports Presence

Wi-Fi service provider Boingo Wireless today extended the number of hotspots their user base can roam to. A deal with Opti-Fi Networks adds wireless networks at 30 North American airports.

This agreement, Boingo said, allows for high speed wireless Internet access at American and Canadian airports including “Albany, NY, International Airport; Edmonton, Alberta, International Airport; Hamilton, Ontario, International Airport; Jackson Hole, WY, Airport, and many others from coast to coast. It also includes access at Airtran Airways gates at many major airports including Atlanta-Hartsfield International Airport; Baltimore-Washington International Airport; Chicago Midway Airport; and Miami International Airport.”

Skype, Boingo Team for New Wireless Service

VOIP provider Skype and Wi-Fit hotspot operator Boingo Wireless today said they were teaming to provide Skype users the ability to use the latter’s network of 18,000+ locations for unlimited wireless access for Internet telephony calls.

The new service, to be called Skype Zones, will cost $7.95 per month. Skype’s customers will be able to access the current beta version through a custom Skype build of Boingo’s software. Users log onto Skype Zones through one of Boingo’s hotspots and once connected can make Skype calls and access features such as presence, global user directory, contact lists and instant messaging.
