Wozniak Goes Dancing

Wozniak Goes Dancing

He made the news last week with the announcement that he was joining Fusion-io, and now Steve Wozniak has made headlines again, ready to answer the burning question – can geeks dance?

ABC has given the lineup for its new season of Dancing with the Stars, and Wozniak’s name is there, having signed up for the show, along with such luminaries as former pop stars Belinda Carlisle and Jewel, and one-time Bond girl Denise Richards.

It’s a far cry from designing the inside of the first Apple computer, or starting the company in 1976 with Steve Jobs.

Activision Announces Franchise Updates

Activision Announces Franchise Updates

In recent months, game publisher Activision has been all about building its franchise juggernauts, announcing it would be killing off games series it didn’t think had to the potential to become long-running franchises in favor of long-running titles it can iterate (and sell) over and over again. At the same event where the company announced its Blizzard unit would start running ads from Microsoft subsidiary Massive, Activision also announced it plans additional sequels in its Guitar Hero,Call of Duty, and Tony Hawk franchises, even as it kills off formerly-touted titles like Ghostbusters and Chronicles of Riddick.

Strengthen Your (Inner) Bond with Sony

Sony Pictures is ramping up to the premiere of the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale in mid-November, so it should be no surprise that some of the corporate giant’s numerous other divisions are getting in on all the secret-agent action. To whit: Bond-themed Vaio notebook computers and Cyber-shot cameras.

In the U.S., in addition to Bond-themed Sony-Ericsson Cyber-shot phones, espionage fans can get their hands on a the matte-black Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T50/JB digital camera, which matches the specifications of its more-generic T50 siblings (7.2 megapixel resolution, 3-inch LCD screen, 56 MB internal memory, ISO 1000 sensitivity, nd more: see Digital Trends’ review) but adds the 007 gun logo and carrying case for a price tag of $449—which is, oddly enough, $50 below Sony’s own asking price for an unbranded T50.

Both of the special edition K800 and K790 Cyber-shot camera phones will only be available for three months, so you better snap one while you can.

“With both the latest Cyber-shot phone and the M600 Smartphone being used to assist the non-stop action in Casino Royale, plus a major marketing promotion to coincide with the launch of the movie, this is yet another example of collaboration between us and Sony Pictures Entertainment,” says Jan Wareby, Corporate Executive Vice President and Head of Sales and Marketing at Sony Ericsson. “The special silver edition Cyber-shot camera phones will allow Bond fans to personalize their experience of this fantastic movie whilst also enjoying one of the best performing camera phones on the market.”

Activision Revokes EA’s License to 007

Activision, MGM, and EON Productions Ltd. today announced that Activision has acquired the exclusive rights to develop and publish interactive games based on the James Bond franchise. The license extends through the year 2014; according to entertainment publication Variety, the deal is worth about $50 million.

The deal is a major shakeup: Bond games have been the exlcusive province of video game giant Electronic Arts since the company published its first Bond-based game in 1998, and EA’s license wasn’t set to expire until 2010. While EA’s BOn games were initially a financial success, speculation about the Activision deal fingers EA for not being able to come up with a gaming tie-in for Casino Royale, the next film in the Bond franchise scheduled to hit theaters November 30, 2006. EA’s failure reportedly cost MGM millions in licensing fees.

MP3 Player Guide

Everyone wants one. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, colors and cases. Most let you listen to music, some allow you to watch video and a few are even wireless. They’re one of the most popular consumer electronics products out there and a computer company named Apple is the current industry leader. We are of course referring to the mighty digital audio or MP3 player.

Since their introduction in the late ‘90s, digital audio players have become one of the run away successes of portable electronics. 2003 sales figures, according to the Consumer Electronics Association, were a staggering $556 million, which was a 171 percent increase over the previous year. More importantly, the CEA projects this revenue will grow by another 27 percent this year.
