Sony Vaio X Series

Sony Vaio X Series

Move over, MacBook Air. Although Dell already ripped up Apple’s envelope with the thinner-than-Air Adamo, Sony has set its own sights on the King of Thin, and the resulting Vaio X Series should put both imitator and imitated to shame.

Sony teased the Vaio X at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin, which essentially functions as the European version of CES. With no spec sheet or press release to be found, all we know are the bare essentials from Sony’s press conference: the screen spans 11.1 inches, the whole laptop measures only 0.55 inches thick (compared to 0.76 inches on the Air), and Sony has wrapped it in so much carbon fiber that its total weight comes to only 1.5 pounds. That’s just a smidge heavier than the almost-pocketable and highly flippable 1.4-pound Vaio P.

Slurpr Promises to Aggregate Free Wi-Fi

Slurpr Promises to Aggregate Free Wi-Fi

Ever sat down somewhere with your Wi-Fi capable device, been greeted with a small swarm of publicly-accessible networks, and wondered which you should choose to access the Internet? Well, why not use all of them? Mark Hoekstra and his colleague Boris at Geek Technique have come up with a not-quite-tiny box dubbed the Slurpr which can attach to as many as six Wi-Fi networks and offer the combined bandwidth as a single broadband connection. The box runs Debian Linux, sports a MIPS embedded processor, wired Ethernet, 64 MB of RAM, 128 MB of onboard flash memory, 4 GB Compact Flash card, and six MiniPCI slots sporting Senao/Engenius 5354MP Wi-Fi cards using the Atheros AR5213 chipset.

Velocity Micro’s Ultimate Media Center

Velocity Micro

Hey! Stop spending all your money on Christmas presents and don’t buy that PS3 or Wii on eBay just yet. In a recent post on Velocity Micro’s blog, Chris Morley, Director of Product Development, outlines what he wants for Christmas:

I want the ultimate media center. I want something with enough muscle to power multiple streams of high definition video—both in playback and recording—along with streaming to multiple TVs around the house. I also want to be able to easily burn copies of my favorite TV shows that I’ve recorded and encode videos for use on my PSP.

Sony ‘Creation box’ Sharpens TV Images

“The Creation Box, going on sale in Japan this month with no plans to offer it overseas, looks like a black box with a handheld remote control. It uses technology that adjusts TV signals so that images’ outlines and textures look sharper and clearer, even on larger screens.”

The Creation box is priced at $4800 and you will still need a TV and a seperate tuner.

Plextor ConvertX PVR

Quote from the review:

“Let’s be honest here, ways to capture video onto a PC are a dime a dozen now. Watching TV on your box is old hat, and even PVR is a fairly easy thing to figure out, if you take the time. It’s not rocket science, and you don’t have to spend a lot of money doing it. All you need is a TV Tuner card, or breakout box, a decent enough system and some software to make it all happen. If you have cable or satellite, that’s just a bonus.

Actiontec Wireless Digital Media Player

Quote from the review:

“Overall, the Actiontec Wireless Digital Media Player is useful if you are either cramped for space or cramped for cash. Through the 802.11b wireless card that is included, it does a pretty good job streaming video and audio without any break up or dropped frames. The menu does require a bit of getting used to, but after a while it should be easy to navigate.

I tried playing quite a few DivX/XviD movies and they all played flawlessly. There is an update feature on the box which I believe is used to update any codec issues that may arise in the future. Rather useful to keep this box up to date with the latest.”
