Is That The Conquistador? They Run Tight.

Well, you’ve got to give Microsoft one point: they didn’t produce a conventional television ad.

Software giant Microsoft has kicked off its $300 million ad campaign to promote its Windows Vista operating system with a spot featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld and Microsoft founder Bill Gates having a chance meeting at a fictional store called Shoe Circus, Seinfeld helping Gates into a pair of size 10 “Conquistadors,” and Bill Gates “adjusting his shorts” as a signal Microsoft has big things in the works. The ad is available via Microsoft’s Web site using the company’s Silverlight technology; copies are also popping up on YouTube.

Microsoft Planning Big Vista Campaign?

Speaking at Microsoft’s yearly Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft’s VP of Vista Consumer marketing Brad Brooks did what, a year ago, might have been unthinkable: acknowledged users have had some hesitations about Microsoft’s latest-and-greatest operating system.

"We broke a lot of things," Brooks acknowledged. "We know that, and we know it caused you a lot of pain. It got customers thinking, hey, is Windows Vista a generation we want to get invested in?"

Microsoft Drops Retail Vista Prices

Microsoft Drops Retail Vista Prices

If the much-anticipated, slightly beleaguered launch of Vista Service Pack 1 still doesn’t have Windows XP holdouts running down to the store to get on board with Vista, Microsoft is hoping its latest move will: dropping the price. On Thursday, the company announced price cuts on several stand-alone retail versions of Windows Vista.

Microsoft’s top-shelf Windows Vista Ultimate package will drop from $399 to $319 in stores, while the upgrade version available to current Windows XP owners will go from $259 to $219. The less fully featured Windows Vista Premium upgrade will go from $159 to $129.
