Carcaterra to Pen Atari’s Alone in the Dark

Video game publisher Atari announced today that it has struck a deal with best-selling novelist and screenwriter Lorenzo Carcaterra to write the script for the company’s forthcoming apolocyptic game title Alone in the Dark.

Alone in the Dark is a long-standing, zombie-filled, occult-themed title inspired by the work of horror master H.P Lovecraft; the original Alone in the Dark video game was developed by Infogrames in 1992 and spawned several sequels. In the new version, players will take on the role of private detective Edward Carnby as he tries to unravel a world-changing secret behind New York’s Central Park—and survive the story’s single horrifying night. The title has bee percolating for a while under the tentative names Alone in the Dark 5 and Alone in the Dark: Near Death Investigation, and was originally announced at the Tokyo Game show in 2005. The new edition of the game is being developed by Eden Games for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows platforms.

Warner Bros. Television Joins Joost

Nascent online television service Joost has inked yet another deal with a major content provider: Warner Bros. has announced it will offer science fiction and celebrity news channels on Joost later this month. The deal marks the first time the Warner Bros. Television Group will offer Warner-branded television services online. Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

“As one of the premier television production studios, the fact that Warner Bros. has chosen to create its first online channels on the Joost platform shows that we are creating a unique, communal television experience for viewers where content owners can distribute professionally-produced programming with the quality and security they need,” said Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, executive vice president, content strategy and acquisition.

Google Zeitgeist Highlights 2006 Searches

As Google itself points out, the top search terms its users enter tend to remain fairly constant from year to year—”yellow pages,” “dictionary”, “games,” “maps,” and a number of, um, colorful words. So, in summing up the year, the Internet search titan tends to look for terms and searches which were popular and generated traffic in the current year, but were not popular the previous year. The idea is that these terms have a better chance of representing the topics Internet users are newly curious and passionate about during the year, and capturing the “spirit” of the year’s queries.

Face Recognition Coming to Image Searching

Face Recognition Coming to Image Searching

Ever been frustrated in searching photographs using traditional search engines like Google or Yahoo or image sharing sites? Do you usually get a lot of unrelated images, or find your searching hindered by the (lack of) quality tagging used by other Internet users? Beginning in 2007, Swedish startup company Polar Rose wants to start making image searching easier by leveraging user input and facial recognition technology to accurately identify people in photographs.
