Google Is Most Valuable Brand

Google Is Most Valuable Brand

Branding company Millward Brown Optimor has published its fourth annual BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands survey, which ranks Google as the most valuable brand in the world, and worth $100,039,000,000.

How can they be so exact? The company explains how it reached the figure:

"The dollar value of each brand in the ranking is the sum of all future earnings that brand is forecast to generate, discounted to a present day value."

But Google isn’t the only tech company in the the top 10 of the list. It’s trailed by Microsoft in the number two position, IBM (4th), Apple (6th), China Mobile (7th), and Vodafone (9th).

LG Congratulates Itself on Scarlet Campaign

LG Congratulates Itself on Scarlet Campaign

Folks who’ve been paying close attention to the Internet—or just click through to any online video link they find because they can—may have gotten wind of a new action "TV series" dubbed Scarlet featuring explosions, fighting, and (of course) an improbably photogenic heroine. Sorry: Scarlet won’t be coming to your programming lineup anytime soon: the whole thing was a non-traditional teaser campaign by electronics giant LG to introduce its new "Scarlet" line of LCD televisions. "TV series"…"series of televisions"—get it?

Brand with Biggest Consumer Impact: Apple

Brand with Biggest Consumer Impact: Apple

The results of a new survey released by the UK online magazine brandchannel.com finds that the Apple brand has the most influence on consumers…at least in terms of what respondents said about how brands impact their lives and behavior. Overall, the Apple brand won six of the Brandjunkie survey’s ten categories, including “which brand inspires you the most?” and “what brand can you not live without?”

Microsoft Acquires Credentica’s U-Prove

Microsoft Acquires Credentica

Microsoft is looking to bolster its online privacy portfolio with the acquisition of Credentica’s U-prove technology. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Microsoft is not only getting U-prove: it’s getting the underlying patents, and U-prove’s Stefan Brands and Credentica’s Greg Thompson and Christian Paquin will join Microsoft’s Identity and Access Group.

U-prove was developed as a technology to enable users to offer up only the minimal amount of personal information required to carry out an electronic transaction. The U-prove system also employes encryption to ensure disparate systems can’t mine transaction data for information, building aggregate profiles that potentially violate users’ privacy.

TigerDirect Buying CompUSA Assets

Fans of old-school technology retailing may rejoice: the CompUSA brand may be changing, but it’s not going away. As word broke in late 2007 that the venerable computer retailer CompUSA would be closing its remaining retail stores and, essentially, holding a fire sale on anything left on the shelves, some technology enthusiasts rejoices (whoo hoo! Longer lines at Best Buy, Fry’s, and Circuit City!) but others lamented the loss of a well-known brand, where you could always go for a motherboard at two in the morning. And stop for some fries nearby.

Google Tops Brand Value Rankings

The second annual Brandz survey (PDF) from UK research firm Millward Brown attempts to measure the “brand equity” of almost 40,000 consumer-facing brands by interviewing nearly 1 million consumers around the world, and taking into account brand momentum, a brand’s contribution to business earnings, and the brand’s overall value based on financial data. This year’s result? Google has unseated Microsoft as the world’s top brand.

“Success stories from this year’s Brandz Top 100 demonstrate that winning brands leverage major market trends effectively to create business value,” said Joanna Seddon, global CEO Millward Brown Optimor, in a release. “Strong brands are capable of extending into areas of opportunity to access new revenue streams and to help businesses respond to market changes.”

Yahoo Launching Brand Universes

If, as a consumer, you’ve ever felt that the world’s largest companies are perhaps a little over-eager to point a red-hot iron at your posterior, you’ll be happy to know Internet titan Yahoo is getting ready to help them out even more by launching Brand Universes, portals within the Yahoo network of sites which bring together content, media, and features from across Yahoo’s service offerings into one centralized, themed, and—dare we say?—branded hubs.

Do Consumers Trust the Microsoft Brand?

Would you buy a used car from this company? How about a portable electronics device?

Forrester Research’s2005 Technology Brand Scorecard evaluated the “brand trust” reported by 4,732 U.S. households during September and October 2005 regarding 48 technology brands, 22 of which were “device brands” including companies like Apple Computer, Sony, Intel, Nintendo, and Panasonic.

While the study found that Sony, Panasonic, Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft have the highest brand adoption

Google Unseats Apple in 2005 Brand Poll

An annual survey of branding professionals and students shows Internet search engine Google has unseated Apple Computer worldwide as the top brand of 2005, and eBay-owned voice-over-IP telephony Skype making its first appearance in (a distant) third place. However, while Google topped the poll in 2003 (unseating discount retailer Target), Apple still trumps Google (a bit) on its North American back yard.

The annual survey from brandchannel.com asked “What brand had the most impact on our lives in 2005?” The results are compiled from votes from more than 2,500 branding professionals, students, and other readers in nearly 100 countries
