Britannica Goes Wiki, Sort Of

For all its faults, Wikipedia has become the online encyclopedia of choice for most people. Now its older, venerable colleague, the Encyclopedia Britannica, is borrowing one of Wikipedia’s ideas – after a fashion – by letting selected readers and experts maintain and update entries in its online version.

Also, some experts will be given “rewards” and helped to promote their knowledge, the BBC reports. But the encyclopedia is adamant that it won’t be open to letting just anyone make contributions and amendments.

In a blog, Jorge Cauz, president of Encyclopedia Britannica wrote:

There’s no question that the online reference site Wikipedia is the darling of online reference sites. Despite its share of scandals and debate surrounding the validity of citing Wikipedia articles in schoolwork and research, there’s no question that the online encyclopedia made up entirely of community-generated content has been a hit with the Internet community: in terms of traffic, Wikipedia is one of the Internet’s top “brands.”

Nature Responds to Britannica

In response to the twenty page note put out yesterday by Encyclopedia Britannica regarding issues it had with scientific journal Nature’s December comparison study of the former’s science journal entries versus those of Wikipedia, the publication has posted its own two page response in which it defends its position and says it will not retract its original findings.
