700 Stations Now Broadcasting in HD Radio

iBquity Digital, sole developer and licenser of HD Radio technology in the United States, today announced that as of January 26 700 radio stations had begun broadcasting using the HD Radio format. The latest to flip the switch is Beasley Broadcasting Group’s WXKB-FM.

HD Radio broadcasts, said iBquity, are now being done over both digital AM and FM. These broadcasts include something called HD2 multicasting, which allows radio broadcasters the ability to offer new channels of local programming to supplement their existing formats. In the HD2 broadcasting arena, iBquity expects the number of stations taking advantage of this technology to more than double over the 250 mark.

Fujitsu PC Enables HDTV Recording

The FMV-DESKPOWER TX90L/D with a 32-inch wide LCD panel and the FMV-DESKPOWER LX90L/D with a 20-inch wide LCD panel are Japan’s first PCs that can store and reproduce terrestrial, BS and 110-degree CS digital broadcasting contents without converting the HDTV format. NEC Corp. has also released a PC that can record digital broadcasting contents, but this model replays them by downconverting the HDTV format into the SDTV format. Fujitsu has enabled HDTV recording and playback by introducing its proprietary ASIC, the Secure LSI, for content protection. This ASIC is embedded with the digital broadcasting tuner board jointly developed with Pixela Corp.

Confusion With Digital TV In Mobile Phones

“Work is currently proceeding in parallel on two major issues related to the broadcasting service. The first is a review of the C Profile, the spec for mobile telephony included within the TR-B14 operation standard for terrestrial digital TV broadcasting, while the second is an investigation into whether or not to use scrambling for mobile phone broadcasts (see Fig). These efforts are being handled, respectively, by the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB) of Japan and The Association for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting (D-PA) of Japan. A standard was released for the C Profile in 2002, but strong opposition by mobile phone operators to the data broadcasting specifications condemned it to the status of a provisional standard. “

Powell To Broadcasters: ‘Evolve Or Die’

“Broadcasting is the original mass media. On the other end, there’s a rise of a digital generation that has access to highly individualized and customized news and information,” Powell told an audience at the annual NAB conference.

“Where does broadcasting go as a business? Adapt, evolve or die.”

Mr. Powell’s comments reflect the tension for free, over-the-air broadcasters as they struggle to compete amid a rise of for-pay cable and satellite services and new digital media offerings via the Internet, video-on-demand, and wireless and gaming technologies.
