Movie companies are always looking for ways to leverage the many decades of classic and award-winning films buried deep in their archives, and where once cinemaphiles hopes all those titles would be published on DVD, many important films still remain out of print because the studios can’t justify the cost of restoring, mastering, and publishing them in the new media format. Brawl Sets Nintendo Sales Record
It takes a lot of clanging cash registers to set sales records with the company that brought out legendary games like Super Marios Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl has apparently done it. Nintendo of America announced on Monday that the title had sold a whopping 1.4 million units in the week following its launch on March 9 – a rate of two copies every second.
“Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural phenomenon,” said NoA executive VP of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway, choosing the same hyperbolic words Bill Gates used to describe Halo 3. “Game reviewers and the public alike praise its fun game play and extensive, inventive content.”
Warner Bros. Television Joins Joost
Nascent online television service Joost has inked yet another deal with a major content provider: Warner Bros. has announced it will offer science fiction and celebrity news channels on Joost later this month. The deal marks the first time the Warner Bros. Television Group will offer Warner-branded television services online. Financial terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.
“As one of the premier television production studios, the fact that Warner Bros. has chosen to create its first online channels on the Joost platform shows that we are creating a unique, communal television experience for viewers where content owners can distribute professionally-produced programming with the quality and security they need,” said Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, executive vice president, content strategy and acquisition.
