RIM Acquires Browser Maker Torch Mobile

RIM Acquires Browser Maker Torch Mobile

BlackBerry smartphone might have a lot of things working in their favor—QWERTY keyboards, strong support for mobile push messaging, decent hardware, and now an Apps Store—but a top-flight mobile Web browsing experience just hasn’t been one of them. But now there’s some hope on the horizon for BlackBerry fans: RIM has just made a deal to acquire Torch Mobile, makers of the well-regarded Iris mobile Web browser, with the express purpose of bringing Iris to the BlackBerry.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

IE8 Patch Brings Microsoft In Line With Antitrust Regulators

IE8 Patch Brings Microsoft In Line With Antitrust Regulators

Yesterday Microsoft came out with a patch to satisfy US antitrust authorities. It’s all about the automatic installation of Internet Explorer 8 – or rather, it used to be.

Previously, when a user installed IE in Express mode, it automatically selected the browser as the default, even if the user had another browser selected as the default, and in a report, authorities weren’t too pleased:

"The Express option is most often selected by unsophisticated users who would then lose their prior default selection of a non-Microsoft browser."

Firefox, Over A Billion Served

Firefox, Over A Billion Served

Back in 2004 the first Firefox browser peeked its head over the parapets as a challenger to the mighty Internet Explorer. Last Friday saw Firefox serve up its billionth download of all versions of the browser from Mozilla, with figures suggesting that at 31%, it’s captured almost one-third of the browser market.

It still stands behind IE, which has a 60% share, but well ahead of Safari, Chrome and Opera, each of which can only claim less than 5%.

New Chrome Version Fixes Bugs

New Chrome Version Fixes Bugs

With all the talk of Chrome OS, it’s easy to forget that Google also has a browser of the same name. Now it’s released a new version, 2.0.172.37, to the Beta and Stable channels, that fixes several minor bugs, including an update of the V8 Javascript engine.

More importantly, the new version plugs a pair of major security holes. One that had been found by the Google security team, allowed malicious code exploitation within the Chrome tab sandbox, and the other, a memory corruption in the browser tab process, could have been used by an attack to execute arbitrary code causing a crash of the browser tabs, which in turn would create another security hole for attacker to run code with the logged-on user privileges.

Microsoft Changing IE Default Browser Settings

Microsoft Changing IE Default Browser Settings

Microsoft has been under enormous antitrust pressure in Europe about bundling its Internet Explorer software with its Windows operating system – and Windows 7 won’t come bundled with IE there.

But in a move calculated to stifle at least some of the criticism, the company has said it’s going to give the customer more control of the default browser. In a blog post, the company said:

"IE will never install, or become the default browser without your explicit consent. However, we heard a lot of feedback from a lot of different people and groups and decided to make the user choice of the default browser even more explicit. This change is part of our ongoing commitment to user choice and control.”

Apple Boasts 11 Millions Downloads of Safari 4 in Three Days

Apple Boasts 11 Millions Downloads of Safari 4 in Three Days

Apple has long been shipping its own Web browser Safari with its Mac OS X operating system—and later for Windows PCs as well—as part of an effort started when Microsoft lost interest in developing Internet Explorer for the Mac several year ago. Earlier this week Apple formally rolled out Safari 4 for Mac and Windows at the top of its World Wide Developers Conference…and now the company is trumpeting that the browser has been downloaded some 11 million times in the ensuing three days.

FTC Looking into Google-Apple Ties

FTC Looking into Google-Apple Ties

It’s no secret that Apple and Google have been on fairly friendly terms over the last few years: a few examples include the iPhone tying in with services like YouTube and Google Maps as soon as it became available, and Google’s Chrome browser being based on WebKit, the same KHTML-derived codebase that Apple uses for its own Safari Web browser.

It’s The Launch Of IE 8

It

The battle of the browsers renews today as Microsoft officially launches Internet Explorer 8, a year after the first beta release, ZDNet has reported. Although IE remains the dominant browser in the marketplace, others, like Firefox, have slowly been eroding that superiority, so a lot is riding on this.

However, IE 8 has several new offering, including greater safeguards to stop malware and phishing, grouped tabbing, and the quickly-becoming ubiquitous privacy mode.

With the grouped tabbing, where one tab has been opened from another, or both are from the same site, the tabs are color-coded to make them easier to recognize.

Mozilla Posts A New Version Of Firefox

Mozilla Posts A New Version Of Firefox

Mozilla has issued an update for its Firefox 3 browser. Update 3.0.7, which installed automatically yesterday, giving increased stability as well as offering several security patches.

Among the five patches are three that Mozilla has rated as critical, including to the PNG and XL browser components that could previously have resulted in a hacker being able to remotely execute code.

The stability issues addressed include a bug that could leave the file menu disabled, and other that caused cookie files to vanish. The update includes fixes for Mac, Linux and Windows versions of the browser.

Mozilla Fennec Gets Pre-Alpha Release

Mozilla Fennec Gets Pre-Alpha Release

Opera isn’t the only open-source browser elbowing out room for itself in the mobile realm. On Tuesday, Mozilla released the first pre-alpha of its Fennec mobile browser for Windows Mobile 6.1.

According to developers, this early release is only intended for the HTC Touch Pro, which made an ideal development platform due to its high-resolution VGA screen and dedicated QWERTY keyboard for input. Mozilla cut both its automatic update feature and support for plug-ins in this early release to get the browser more stable for its public outing.
