Digital music service eMusic has long been a champion of selling DRM-free tracks in MP3 format…and while that has made eMusic friends with independent artists and labels around the world (and a terrific source for discovering new music), it has kept the major labels away…until now. As major labels have embraced offering DRM-free tracks through iTunes, Amazon, and other digital music retailers, eMusic doesn’t seem so scary anymore…and Sony has become the first major label to sign up to offer tracks for sale via eMusic. However—at least at first—Sony won’t be offering up its latest and greatest: the deal will cover music that’s two or more years old, but that still includes popular recordings from teh likes of The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, and many other Sony artists.

Facebook Accomodates Musicians, Filmmakers
Although Facebook has has offered businesses profile pages since November with the launch of its Facebook Pages feature, last Thursday it kicked the effort to promote such pages for musicians and filmmakers into high gear with the launch of two guides. Music on Facebook and Film on Facebook show budding performers and producers how to launch profile pages that can feature music players, songs for download, videos, and more.
Professional musicians with Facebook profiles include Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews Band, and Coldplay. Besides hosting basic biographical information, photos, and discography, artists can link directly to albums and songs for sale on iTunes with third-party applications, and offer tickets via Music Today. Artist profiles are free, and open to both professionals and amateurs alike.

Social networking mega-site MySpace has struck a deal with Sony BMG to let MySpace users stream selected Sony BMG music videos and audio content, in exchange for a share of sponsorship and advertising revenues. The Boss Lends Sirius His Voice
