OWC Debuts Blu-ray Burner with 4 Interfaces

Other World Computing has announced a new external Blu-ray burner—and although the company is mainly known for selling Mac peripherals, the OWC Mercury Pro Blu-ray Burner features interfaces that should let users burn BD media from just about anything with a USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800, or eSATA port.

The burner managed 4× speeds, meaning it pushes about 1 GB per minute to BD media, making it a decent backup solution for folks with tons of video, photos, music, or other digital media to back up—although burning 50 GB to a double-layer BD disc will still take almost an hour. The drive can also read and/or write a wide swath of other optical formats—including DVD, CD, and even HD-DVD.

Sony Debuts Mac Friendly DVD Burner

Sony today announced details about the forth coming DRX-810UL/T external DVD burner. This unit, which is Mac and PC compatible, will be available in November for less than $150.

The DRX-810UL/T, said Sony, works with both PCs and Macs. It comes bundled with both Toast 6 Lite (Mac) and Nero (PC) software for storing and sharing of home movies, digital photos, and music at 8X maximum for DVD+R Double Layer recording speed, enabling users to burn up to 8.5GB of video, data, music or images on compatible media in about fifteen minutes.

Manufacturers will still have some leeway to charge higher prices for dual-layer DVD burning capabilities, but for many, a DVD burner will become a commodity product later this fall. For the first time in more than a decade, moreover, the optical storage industry also won’t have a clear-cut path leading toward a next-generation storage medium.

As always, a problem for drive makers is a boon for consumers. Take, for example, the fate of the CD writer: several years ago, the ability to burn a CD could command well over a hundred dollars. Today, a high-end internal CD burner can be purchased for as little as $40. The shift won’t happen overnight, manufacturers said, but the writing is on the wall.  Read more...
