Memorex MyVideo (thumb)

Consumer electronics manufacturers have apparently decided that handheld digital video recorders are going to be a hot category this holiday season; to that end, Memorex has announced its new MyVideo and MyVideo HD digital camcorders, designed to be inexpensive pocket camcorders kids, parents, and amateur video enthusiasts can use to easily capture and share video without investing too much hard-to-come-by cash on a video capture solution.

DXG-125V Camcorder Takes HD to the Great Outdoors

DXG-125V Camcorder Takes HD to the Great Outdoors

DXG is taking high-definition to the great outdoors with its new DXG-125V camcorder, designed to let outdoor soports ethusiasts capture all their greatest moments in 720p glory. The DXG-125V offers a ruggedized, weather-resistant candy-bar design for easy one-handed operation—plus the camcorder includes the all-important carabiner for latching onto packs and gear, and a compass…you know, just in case.

"The DXG-125V is a break-out product in the HD camcorder space," said DXG USA senior marketing VP Paul Goldberg, in a statement. "We are excited to bring such an exciting product to market at such an affordable price, making the quality, compact HD camcorder accessible to all outdoor enthusiasts."

The Best Cell Phone Values

When the Motorola Razr first appeared in back in 2004, the angular marvel retailed for $500 from Cingular, and even that was only after a $100 rebate. Business execs swooned over them, celebrities flaunted them, and regular Joes emptied their bank accounts to get them. Little more than a year later, you could get one for free.

Samsung HDX-R10 Mini 1080p Camcorder

Today’s batch of pocket-sized flash camcorders may all lay claim to “HD resolution,” but true videophiles know that refers to 720p footage – a watered down form of HD that comes closer to DVD quality than the jaw-dropping 1080p footage most of us are acquainted with. Fortunately, even that lofty apex of video resolution is becoming a lot easier to summit these days.

Samsung’s palm-sized HMX-R10 will be one of the smallest camcorders to shoot true 1080p video – that’s 1920 x 1080 pixels, or 2.0 megapixels in the parlance of still cameras. Because the high-resolution CMOS sensor inside is capable of capturing 9 megapixels, it will also shoot stills in that size, similar to a point-and-shoot camera.

Samsung SC-MX20 Camcorder Talks to YouTube

Samsung SC-MX20 Camcorder Talks to YouTube

Samsung is making an appeal to the YouTube generation, announcing its new SC-MX20 compact digital camcorder. A followup to the company’s SC-MX10, the camcorder is distinctly aimed at the online video market with a resolution of 720 by 480 pixels; however, the camcorder also packs a number of other features—and a price tag—that should make it appealing to aspiring cinematographers, both online and off.

“The SC-MX20 is a camcorder that offers a host of advanced features at an impressive price point,” said Samsung Electronics America sales and marketing VP Tony Sorice, in a statement. “Sharing many of the same advanced features as our higher-end digital camcorders, including the head-turning design of the SC-HMX20C, the SC-MX20 is sure to stand out from the crowd of ‘me-too’ camcorders.”

Sony HDR-CX12 Camcorder Detects Smiles

Sony has introduced is new HDR-CX12 high-definition camcorder that features both face detection technology and a Smile Shutter feature that enables videographers to snap still photos of smiling subjects even while they’re shooting video. And users can even prioritize the smiles of adults and children to help make sure they get that perfect shot, and capture smiles even when in standby mode: just aim the camcorder at the subject, and it’ll worry about seeing the smiles.

JVC Offers Full-Featured YouTube Camcorder

It’s no secret that YouTube played a major role in popularizing the ultra-cheap Flip camcorder, which was practically tailor-made for jamming videos to the site, but for those with more serious YouTube ambitions, the Flip falls a little short. JVC hopes to cater to this crowd with its new Everio S-series camcorder, the GZ-MS100, which combines a fuller camcorder feature set alongside specialized YouTube functions.

Although styled close to the Everio G-series HDD camcorders, the MS100 uses SD cards for recording to keep costs down – meaning you’ll have to buy your own. It does, however, retain many G-Series features, including a 2-7-inch flip-out LCD, a Konica Minolta lens with 35x optical zoom, and Laser Touch buttons that users merely glide a finger along to operate.

Canon to Offer HR10 AVCHD DVD Camcorder

Canon to Offer HR10 AVCHD DVD Camcorder

Canon has announced it plans to enter the AVCHD camcorder market with its new HR10 HD Camcorder. The HR10 can capture full HD (1,920 by 1,080 pixel) video using a 1/2.7-inch CMOS image sensor and stores the video to 3-inch DVD discs rather than an integrated hard drive, solid-state drive, or other media.

"Research shows that consumers are looking for the convenience of DVD, as well as high-quality HD video when choosing a camcorder," said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior VP and general manager of Canon USA’s Consumer Imaging Group, in a release. "The Canon HR10 HD Camcorder enhances our offerings to the home theater aficionado, who demands nothing but the best in image quality, expands our product portfolio and strengthens our market leadership."

Sony Shows New XDCAM Tapeless Camcorder

Sony Shows New XDCAM Tapeless Camcorder

For folks who take their video a little more seriously than a point-and-shoot camcorder will permit, Sony has announced new entries in its XDCAM line of high-definition camcorder gear due to hit the market later this year. Designed for businesses and so-called “prosumers,” the new XDCAM EX will be a tapeless camcorder which can record to Sony’s just announced SxS memory cards at rates up to 50 Mbps, and record up to eight channels (4:2:2) of audio.

Canon Aims High-Def with New Camcorders

Canon Aims High-Def with New Camcorders

After almost four years, Canon has updated its well-regarded XL H1 handheld camcorder model with two new cameras, the XH A1 and XH G1 high-definition camcorders, finally offering high-definition options for broadcasters, filmmakers, and cinematographers with price tags which, while substantial, at least aren’t astronomical.

The XH A1 and XH G1 both sport a 20x HD lens, optical stabilization, and frame rates of 60i, 24F, and 30F (and both can be optionally converted to 50i/60i PAL standards). Both cameras sport one-third inch 1440 by 1080 CCDs which capture video at 1080i resolution, and offer 2 image settings, including color gain, RGB independent gain, and a 6-axis matrix: settings (including personalized setups and functions) can be stored in the camera’s internal memory or moved between cameras using SD cards.
