Market analysis firm The Carmel Group has published its study “Digital Video Recorders 2007: Time In A Magical Box,” in which it projects that some 46 percent of U.S. television households will be using digital video recorders by 2010. Furthermore, the group notes that U.S. cable television providers already account for the majority of DVR users, with cable companies accounting for 56 percent of the estimated 26 million DVR users in the United States. Satellite providers account for 38 percent, telcos for 1 percent, and independent providers like TiVo or 4 percent of the market.

But the devices, which record shows onto a computer-style hard disk and allow individuals to pause and rewind live television, have been slow to win the hearts and dollars of consumers despite a cultlike devotion.
On the market since 1999, only 3.8 million of the devices will be in U.S. households by the end of this year, according to the Yankee Group, compared with more than 90 million VCRs.
That may soon change, experts say.
By the end of the year, Comcast Corp. will begin providing Sacramento, Roseville and Stockton customers with a cable box that includes a built-in DVR for $9.95 a month.
Music piracy suit targets 261 downloaders
The lawsuits, filed in federal courts around the country, targeted people who make songs on their computers available to others online — making a distinction between people who download and those who distribute. The suits did not name Internet file-sharing services like Kazaa, Gnutella and Grokster, which enable the downloading of millions of songs.
By late Monday, no suits had been filed in Sacramento, but about 20 were filed in federal courts in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose.
