AT&T Looking To Extend iPhone Deal?

AT&T Looking To Extend iPhone Deal?

A report in the Wall Street Journal says that AT&T is currently in talks with Apple, seeking to extend its deal as exclusive US carrier for the iPhone through 2011.

AT&T was the first carrier to sign a deal with Apple for the phone in 2007, and has sold millions of the handsets, although consumers have often been unhappy with only being able to get the iPhone from one carrier – as have other carriers.

Indeed, in Germany T-Mobile was forced to go to court to retain it’s exclusive rights, while in France Orange had to unlock handsets.

Sprint Faces $1.2 Bln Class Action Suit

Telecommunications operation Sprint is now facing a $1.2 billion class action lawsuit over allegation that allege the company’s early termination fees violate both the Federal Communications Act and laws in every states. The new lawsuit has been filed by Scott Bursor, the same attorney who spearheaded a case in California against Sprint over unlawful termination fees—and won a $73 million judgement earlier this year.

Orange Set to Carry iPhone in France

Orange Set to Carry iPhone in France

With iPhone carrier contracts settled in the United Kingdom and Germany, France became the next major European nation for Apple to scratch off its list on Thursday, when France Telecom’s Orange network announced it would become the exclusive iPhone carrier in the country.

According to Reuters, CEO Didier Lombard broke the news at an industry conference in Vietnam, confirming rumors that have been swirling over carrier selection for months. Deutsche Telekom will be the sole carrier for iPhones in Germany, and O2 in the United Kingdom. Both networks will get the phones on November 9, but Orange has not announced when it will land in France. The 8GB version of the phone will go for £269 on top of a contract in the UK, but Apple hasn’t yet released pricing in other countries. Directly converting the British price to Euros would place it around €386.

U.S. Customers Happy With Wireless Carriers

The report found that 68% are satisfied or very satisfied with the coverage and services their carrier is providing, and only 10% of U.S. wireless customers are dissatisfied. Despite widespreadreporting by consumer groups that actual U.S. wireless coverage is spotty and cellular service somewhat unreliable – findings JupiterResearch does not dispute – consumer satisfaction levels areuniformly high.

“U.S. consumers have modest expectations of coverage and services, and consumers moderate their expectations based on a carrier’s reputation and pricing,” said Avi Greengart, Senior Analyst at JupiterResearch. “If you brand yourself as a low cost carrier, you don’t need to provide best coverage. If you brand yourself ‘the best network’ you’d better deliver good coverage. As long as carriers adopt a consistent marketing and branding position, and align their operational practices accordingly, there are several ways to keep customers happy beyond pouring money blindly into towers and base stations,” Greengart said.

Feds Slap Fees On AT&T’s VoIP

This week the FCC announced its decision that traditional telephone calls that start and end on the public switched telephone network (PSTN), but are carried part of the time on AT&T’s Internet backbone, are classified as telecommunications service. Those calls are subject to the access charges that are exchanged when a telephone call made through one carrier ends on another carrier’s network.
