A Child Porn Download? Blame The Cat!

A Child Porn Download? Blame The Cat!

According to an AP report, Keith Griffin of Jensen Beach, Florida, has been accused of downloading more than 1,000 images of child pornography. He’s currently in jail on a quarter-of-a-million dollar bond, awaiting trial on 10 counts of child porn possession.

His defense, however, is unusual, to say the least.

Griffin claims he was actually downloading music when his cat jumped on the computer keyboard while he was out of the room – something he says the cat frequently did.

When he returned, Griffin said “strange things” had happened to his computer.

LG To Pack Virtualization Technology into Monitors

South Korean electronics giant LG has announced it will produce a new series of SmartVine N-series LCD displays that integrate virtual desktop technology from NComputing, enabling up to 11 users to share the same computer. Designed mainly for emerging markets, education, and retail/commercial environments, the technology is designed to let organizations and business leverage the capabilities of their computing hardware and extend it further throughout an organization—saving not just money in up-front hardware costs, but yielding long-term savings in terms of reduced power consumption and e-waste.

Monster Has New HD Cables

Monster Has New HD Cables

Monster Cable, partnering with Gennum Corporation, has introduced the first Long Distance Hyper-Speed products for HDMI. Often, long runs of HDMI would not carry the HD signal at a high enough resolution, so that, over longer cable runs, high-bandwidth HDMI signals can be prone to signal attenuation and timing errors, referred to as "jitter," which can cause aberrations in the picture, from streaks and flashing pixels to inaccurate color.

UK iTunes Censors Titles

UK iTunes Censors Titles

Hot, or H*t? If you were on the UK iTunes site at the right time last week, you’d have wondered what was so bad about the word hot that it needed to be censored. Or what poor old Johnny Cash had done to become J****y Cash.

An Apple spokesman told the BBC there had been a “database glitch,” which happened when iTunes check for explicit references, and that he had no idea why the software had picked on innocent words, but there was nothing intentional in the “censorship.”

Bridge Offers Five Miles of Wi-Fi

HD Communcations Corp. has introduced its HD26200 wireless network bridge which can latch together two locations up to five miles apart—so long as they have a direct line of sight between them. The system consists of two Ubiquiti network radios that operate in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz band; the 17dbi dual polarity antennas are configured in a wireless bridge mode that, in theory, can offer up to 50 Mbps in TCP/IP bandwidth, although actual performance will depend on installation variables. Even between the HD26200 is powered over Ethernet, so the entire installation can be handled with outdoor CAT 5 cabling. And instead of costing thousands of dollars, the bridge is available for just $318.

The Holodeck Gets One Step Closer

The Holodeck Gets One Step CloserOkay, so the holodeck made famous by Jean-Luc Picard and the Starship Enterprise still won’t be happening anytime soon. But it’s come one step closer with the announcement that scientistsat the University of Arizona, Tucson have developed a polymer on which holograms can be written in literally minutes, and which can be erased and used over andover like a whiteboard, Nature has reported, according to the BBC.   How do you even make holograms? It’sa tricky process, involving a mix of refracted laser light with light from another laser that puts down a static image of the object; in other words, it takes a while.   But the new polymer, developed by Savas Tay and others, can reportedly have the image written to it in minutes, and has proved stable through hundreds and erase and rewrite procedures.   The immediate benefits willbe in operations, as the team can take data directly from procedures like MRI or CAT scans to create a hologram. But they can just as easily be created using data from microscopes or satellites.  Although to date they’ve only used a polymer that was 10cm by 10cm, that’s not a limit. As they wrote,   "There is no technological limit to the achievable display size, because large thin-film devices can be fabricated and even tiled together."   Make it so.

Sony Pumps Up Home Video Distribution

Sony Pumps Up Home Video Distribution

For every person who loves digitial media, there’s always going to be someone who loves it just a little bit more. You might like high-definition video…but someone else is going to want a high-definition media server. And then someone else is going to want to stream high-def content from that server to, say, the home theater and the rumpus room. And then, dontcha know, someone will want—no, need—to stream high definition video to twelve different places in their home. All at the same time.

Google Opens Video Store, Online Payments

It’s possible Google surprised absolutely no one: at his keynote today at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, Google co-founder Larry Page took the wraps off the Google Video Store, officially putting the Internet giant in the content distribution business.

Insurance Adjusters Aren’t All Bad

Picture the aftermath of a devastating hurricane. Fallen tress severed power lines. Houses are missing their roofs. But despite the conditions, insurance adjusters must access the damages. The electricity may be down for days or weeks. Modernity necessitates computers, cell phones and satellites. Crawford and Company Catastrophe Services (CAT) built a satellite-communication truck to venture into areas of destruction, and the company tested the rig after Hurricane Dennis racked Pensacola, FL. Essentially the truck provides a stable power source for adjustors to complete their jobs. The quicker insurance companies process claims; the quicker life returns to normal.
