Dell?s World of Warcraft Notebook: Yowza!

OK, I had the chance to see this puppy in action a couple of weeks ago, and I have to admit it made me weak in the knees. This is no lightweight box, and lugging it around will likely do more for your biceps than almost any other kind of weight training I can think of.

RCA Will Be There When Analog TV Goes Black

If you’re like me, nothing beats the snuggly feeling of cuddling up in a room with your trusty old cathode-ray tube television. You know, the good one in the big wooden cabinet which can tune to thirteen separate channels, and on a good day can pull in that UHF station from the next town over if you jiggle the antenna a little bit. Ah, the smell of ozone! And you know, there’s no way you’re gonna get one of those newfangled flat screen things into that custom cabinet.

The Headlines Say?

According to a number of recently published reports, demand for ?home media servers? ? generally defined as hard drive-based platforms with media networking software that enable the use of a home network for media sharing purposes ? is set to accelerate to staggering heights in just the next few years.

Canon, Toshiba Flat-Screen SED Panels

The SED, based on a new type of flat-panel display technology, was created through the merging of Canon’s proprietary electron-emission and microfabrication technologies with Toshiba’s cathode-ray-tube (CRT) technology and mass-production technologies for liquid crystal displays and semiconductors. Like conventional CRT televisions, the SED utilizes the collision of electrons with a phosphor-coated screen to emit light. Electron emitters, which correspond to an electron gun in a CRT television, are distributed in an amount equal to the number of pixels on the display. In addition to high brightness and high definition, the SED delivers exceptional overall image quality — fast video-response performance, high contrast, high gradation levels — and low power consumption.

IBM Introduces 22-inch ThinkVision Monitor

From IBMs press release:

IBM today announced the release of the ThinkVision C220p monitor, a high performance Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) that delivers precise imaging and color clarity at about half the price of some comparable screen size flat-panel monitors.

With a viewable image size nearly equivalent (within 0.1 inches) to the 20.1-inch IBM ThinkVision L200p flat-panel, this 22-inch CRT offers more color and image purity when compared with some flat-panels. Designed with a maximum resolution of 2048 x 1536 for increased brightness and contrast, the C220p boasts a full-flat screen that reduces distortion at the edge of the display to create a more uniform image and reflect less light into the user’s eyes. With the use of an aperture grille, a display technology that beams a series of unbroken vertical stripes instead of dots, picture quality is maximized.

LCD and Plasma TV sales skyrocket

These two technologies are fueling the fastest growth among video products in terms of sales.

Both LCD and Plasma TVs offer many features over the traditional CRT (cathode ray tube) TVs, including larger, thinner and flatter screens, less glare and less radiation emission. Based on data collected by the CEA, LCD and plasma sets now comprise 20 percent of all digital TV (DTV) unit sales. DTV unit sales totaled 1.4 million through June of this year.

Samsung unveils “Natural Image” technology

The company expects its technology breakthrough to elevate the Samsung brand the top of the rapidly growing world digital TV market.

On April 29, Samsung Electronics held a briefing on the new DNIe technology and digital TV business strategy. On display were PDP, LCD, projection and cathode ray tube (CRT) models supported by DNIe,which offers far greater image detail than conventional digital TVs. Samsung Electronics began its research project to improve picture quality back in 1996 and implemented it in stages. The firstprototype digital TV with DNIe was ready last December. The technology can be used with all types of digital TVs to re-create natural colors that truly please. Last year, Samsung sold more color TVsthan any other manufacturer, and now the company is ready to do the same in the digital TV market.
