Internet Explorer 8: One Step Forward, Three Steps Back

It seems that only yesterday, Internet Explorer was a clunky abomination of a browser that lagged behind its competition in all features, crashed constantly, and was generally frowned upon by anyone with the knowhow to download something better. Seeing as the latest version, Internet Explorer 8, was just released yesterday, that embarrassing recollection of failure literally was last week.

B&W flat panel speakers

British speaker maker B&W has gotten the jump on the competition with the introduction of three new models of flat speakers designed to mate perfectly with 42″, 50″ and 60″ flat panel displays. The new “Flat Panel Monitor” (FPM) series are the ideal audio accompaniment for LCD and plasma video screens.

The FPM4 is just the right size for a 42″ screen; the FPM5 is perfect for 50″ models, and the FPM6 matches 60″ screens, of course. Each speaker features a three-driver array, with dual mid/woofers flanking a central tweeter. Each can be wall-mounted, shelf- or tabletop-mounted, or floor-mounted with optional stands, and each FPM speaker can also be turned horizontally to function as a center channel speaker above or below a flat-panel display.

Gateway offers 1,000-watt sound for $1,000

The Gateway KAS-303 Home Theater System — which today takes its place at the top of the Gateway home theater system line-up — delivers stunning clarity backed up by 1,000 watts of power.  Priced at just $999(1) including the 6.1 receiver, progressive-scan DVD player, center channel speaker, five satellite speakers and subwoofer, it offers more power than most systems  costing twice as much.

Also today, the company expanded its LCD TV line to include a compact 13-inch version and a 30-inch 16:9 wide-screen model, making Gateway the premier destination for digital TVs.

Unlike traditional retailers and typical direct companies, Gateway has the ability to showcase home theater systems, thin TVs and other CE devices in its nationwide network of 190 stores.  This enables consumers to evaluate how the products perform and work together before making a purchase decision. Gateway’s consumer research during the past six months shows that roughly 85 percent of consumers expect to purchase CE products at a retail store, demonstrating the company’s distinct advantage with its multi-channel direct model.

The KAS-303 Gateway Home Theater System and new LCD TVs build on Gateway’s outstanding track record in home entertainment.  Less than a year after launching its first thin television, Gateway, Inc. has become America’s top seller of plasma screen TVs to consumers across all product sizes, surpassing Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and other traditional industry leaders, according to Gateway’s own figures.

“Gateway’s home theaters and full line of market-leading digital TVs bring a stunning cinematic experience to the comfort of home,” said Matt Milne, vice president of digital solutions, Gateway, Inc.  “Available at half the price of most competitive offerings, the powerful, 1,000-watt sound system creates a first-class entertainment experience without emptying our customer’s wallets.”
