Intel Launches Centrino 2 Mobile Platform

Intel has formally taken the wraps off its Centrino 2 mobile platform, offering intregrated Wi-Fi wireless networking, an option for discrete video controllers, and new HUGI—Hurry Up and Get Idle—technology designed to reduce processor power consumption (and even disable parts of the CPU) in order to extend battery life in notebooks and mobile devices. Centrino 2 technology also takes up far less space than its predecessors, opening the door for more manufacturers to produce super-thin notebook computers.

Intel’s Next Generation Hardware and Viiv Centrino for the Home

We saw the next generation of Intel hardware during this week at Intel?s developer forum.  This hardware promises vastly greater performance or vastly less power consumption in what could be a completely new class of devices.

Multi-Core Kicks out MHz

Since the beginning of the PC, we have measured performance by MHz; Intel is signaling that is about to end, however, as they focus on adding cores rather than just speed to increase performance.  They are currently selling two core products and indicated they have four core products in the development process, with more and more cores likely to follow.  As the parts flow to market, this move should dramatically increase your ability to multi-task and more effectively have your computer address threats like viruses and serve several users at once.  The second capability is thought to be critical for media distribution in the home and it certainly could make games vastly more complex and realistic over time.

Fujitsu S6130 Notebook Review

Quote from the review:

“It’s becoming quite rare these days to find a non-Centrino based notebook. Practically all newly released models are based on the Intel Centrino mobile technology. nd for good reasons too. From our past reviews of Centrino based notebooks, these few factors helped explain the lopsided use of this technology in current generation notebooks.

Intel Kicks Off Centrino Ad Campaign

The ads will tout the notebooks’ ability to “unwire,” or detach, from a power line and a modem or an Ethernet network cable, and to check e-mail or surf the Web using wireless networking. The Centrino bundle includes an 802.11 wireless module, along with the Pentium M processor and an Intel chipset. Centrino offered only the 802.11b standard, at first, but Intel recently upgraded it with a dual-band 802.11b/g module. The module has since been working its way into new notebook models.

IBM ThinkPad T40 review

Quote from the review at Whining Dog:

“Let’s be honest here – the ThinkPad T40 isn’t for everyone. It’s a fairly expensive laptop that can easily place itself out of the price range of many out there. However if you have the funds, you should definitely check out the T40. The IBM ThinkPad T40 stands above the rest of the Centrino notebook class. It does this by providing a solid notebook design, reliable and durable construction, and a solid feature set all in a lightweight and quiet chassis. I’ve been using an IBM ThinkPad for nearly three years and the T40 continues that tradition.”
