Palm unveiled its well-received, inexpensive Centro smartphone with Sprint in September 2007, with the handset launching on AT&T in February and Verizon offering it just this month. Now, Palm is offering an unlocked version of the device without a service plan—and it’s priced at $299, rather than the $99 users have been paying for a version tied to a mobile provider.

AT&T Launches Palm Centro for $99
Almost five months after its introduction, AT&T is now offering the inexpensive Palm Centro smartphone with a full QWERTY keypad for messaging, along with email and Web browsing capabilities. The Centro initially debuted on Sprint’s wireless network; AT&T’s version sports a new glacier white look with green keypad accents, and rides on AT&T’s lower bandwidth EDGE network for data services. In about a month’s time, AT&T also plans to roll out an obsidian black version of the Centro.
Palm Debuts Inexpensive Centro Smartphone
Palm has formally announced its new Centro, an affordable new smartphone design aimed at consumers and everyday people who need to organize and manage their lives. Unlike the Treo series, which has traditionally leaned toward business and corporate users, the Centro aims to tap into consumer culture by enabling users to keep up with friends and family through text messaging and email, browse the Web, and access Internet content, all from one device. And it will be available in ruby red or onyx black in mid-October for $99.99, and for its first 90 days it will be exclusive to Sprint.
