Toshiba’s Dynario Fuel Cell Charger Lights up Gadgets With Methanol

Toshiba Dynario

You might not hop in a car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and drive to work until decades from now, but you can charge up your gadgets based on a different type of fuel cell in just a few days. After a long line of prototypes, Toshiba has finally released the Dynario, its first methanol-powered gadget charger.

Fill the Dynario with methanol – the same stuff powering dragsters, monster trucks and Indy cars – and it reacts with ambient oxygen in the air to produce electricity. Enough electricity, according to Toshiba, to charge two typical mobile phones.

Universal Phone Charger Coming

Universal Phone Charger Coming

You know the scenario – you get a new cell phone, and it comes with a charger that will only work with that brand. So you add that older charger to the tangle of other old chargers in a kitchen drawer.

Well, that’s going to change. By 2012 the vast majority of handsets will support a micro USB universal charger, one that will use 50% less energy on standby.

Michael O’Hara, marketing director for the GSM Association, said:

"This is a broad agreement that will move the industry to a single, energy-efficient charger for all mobile phones."

Get Your Fix with Anyfix Universal Charger

German industrial designer Luigi Calani is known for the rounded, biomorphic forms he introduces to everything from home appliances and vehicles to furniture and buildings. Now the designer has come up with the curvy, futuristic Anyfix universal phone charger that claims to be able to handle 80 percent of the mobile phones on the market—just beware of the use of the word "wireless" that’s often being used to describe it. The charger doesn’t magically charge up telephone batteries using some form of through-the-air transmit power; rather the device is better described as "cord-free," designed to plug directly into a power receptacle and act as a cradle for the phone.
