China Fake Earthquake Hacker Arrested

The earthquake in China’s Sichuan province was a huge natural disaster. Occurring on May 12, it killed some 70,000 people and has left millions homeless, pushing authorities to the limit to try and cope with problems in the isolated area. The last thing they needed was a second earthquake.

But, according to the Beijing News, that’s what they got – or at least a teenage hacker predicting one. According to that newspaper, a 19-year-old hacker identified only as Chen, from Jiangsu province, hacked into a seismology site in Guangxi province in late May, altering text on the homepage so it offered a prediction of a "huge earthquake of magnitude 9 or more."

Via Nano Processors Cut Size, Power Usage

Via Nano Processors Cut Size, Power Usage

Just days after unveiling its promising new OpenBook subnotebook platform, Via has fired up its PR machine once again to announce another big release from the company: a brand new processor line. On Thursday, Via debuted the Nano, a hyper-efficient processor bound to replace Via’s already efficient C7 processors in subnotebooks, UMPCs, and low-power-usage desktops.

The new 64-bit chips will come in processor speeds ranging from 1.0GHz to 1.8GHz, all with snappy 800Mhz bus speeds. The most efficient model, clocked at 1.0GHz, will consume a maximum of only 5 watts when operating, while Via claims all Nano processors except the fastest should be able to idle with as low as one tenth of a watt. In order to make upgrading to the Nano line easier on manufacturers, it has also been designed for pin-to-pin compatibility with the older C7 processors.

HP Goes With Via In China

Computer maker Hewlett-Packard has introduced a new desktop computer aimed exclusively at the Chinese market, the HP Compaq dx2020, and the system is notable not because it’s an HP product exclusively for the Chinese market, but because it isn’t driven by an Intel or AMD processor. Instead, the dx2020 marks the first time a major computer manufacturer is shipping a mass-market PC powered by a processor from Via Technologies.

IBM To Manufacture Next Gen VIA Chips

From the press release:

VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip technologies and PC platform solutions, today announced the selection of IBM Microelectronics, the world’s premier information technology supplier, as its foundry partner for the next generation of VIA processors based on the “Esther” core scheduled for the second half of 2004.

VIA’s decision to partner with IBM was based on the company’s ground breaking silicon manufacturing technologies, such as copper interconnects, silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and low-k dielectric insulation, together with its advanced 90-nanometer (nm) process. These advanced manufacturing technologies are designed to reduce power consumption and allow processor speeds of 2GHz and beyond within the same thermal envelope as current VIA processors.
