Qualcomm Eyes Wireless HD Streaming with 600 Mbps Wi-Fi

Communications chip maker Qualcomm is looking to leave all other 802.11n high-bandwidth Wi-Fi solutions in the dust, announcing it has created a new Wi-Fi chip—the N-Stream Wireless LAN WCN1320—capable of pushing 600 Mbps. Qualcomm is positioning the chip as idea for whole-house media streaming solutions, noting the system’s bandwidth makes it capable of handling multiple streams of high-definition video, data, and voice traffic without wires.

“Qualcomm’s advanced 4×4 MIMO technology sets a new performance milestone for home media streaming devices,” said Qualcomm’s senior VP Mike Concannon, in a statement. “Our N-Stream solution delivers a new level of performance and range, enabling next-generation whole-house wireless LAN coverage.”

At a press event today, Belgian health product company Omega Pharma unveiled something it’s calling the E-Waves Phone Chip, a product the company claims neutralizes potentially harmful radiation emitted by mobile phones. Using interference technology, the chip aims to block electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile devices, particularly in the range between 3 MHz and 10 GHz.

AMD Confirms Graphics Antitrust Probe Over

AMD Confirms Graphics Antitrust Probe Over

Chip maker AMD has confirmed that the U.S. Department of Justice has closed the antitrust investigation into ATI’s graphics business, and that no action will be taken against AMD or its ATI business unit. The Justice Department launched the investigation in late 2006, issuing subpoenas for both ATI and Nvidia in an investigation into antitrust violations in the graphics market.

No charges were levied against either Nvidia or ATI, but the investigation reportedly focused on charges of price-fixing, specifically that ATI and Nvidia colluded to artificially set the prices for graphics processors and technology. During the course of the investigation, industry reports also had the Department of Justice examining the marketing practices of both companies.

Intel ’s Larrabee GPU Piles on the Cores

Intel

Ailing graphics giant ATI may not be giving Nvidia much competition in the GPU market these days, but another big chip maker is stepping up to the plate in a bid for gamer dollars. Intel, which already produces modest integrated graphics chips for many budget machines, announced Monday that a multi-core graphics chip is on the way, and it’s quite different from anything the industry has ever seen.

The Larrabee processor will borrow the same multiple-core approach that Intel has used in its CPUs for years, but take it to a new extreme with a least ten cores packed onto a single chip. The end result, they say, will be a gaming experience unrivalled by anything on the market today.

UK Online Banking Fraud Drops

UK Online Banking Fraud DropsVnunet reports that Apacs has published its annual survey of problems affecting the British banking industry, and the biggest surprise is that over online bankingfraud has fallen by a third between 2006 and 2007, even as phishing attacks have risen by over 70% to 25,796. However, it’s not all good news, since the total of card fraud losses took a 25%jump to just over one billion dollars, much of it from stolen UK cards used in overseas frauds. Notably the majority were committed in countries that don’t use the chip and Pin technology thathas been introduced in Britain. Sandra Quinn, director of communications at Apacs, said,   "Although card fraud levels have now begun to go up again due to fraud abroad and card-not-presentfraud losses, chip and Pin has proved an undoubted success in reducing card fraud on the UK high street. As more countries follow our lead and upgrade to chip and Pin, the opportunities for criminalsto use our stolen magnetic stripe details overseas will decrease."   Proof of the effectiveness of chip and Pin is the decrease in face-to-face transaction fraud in the UK since it wasintroduced two years ago – down by two-thirds to $150 million.

Falling In Love with the Gateway One

Several weeks ago I argued it was time to take a look at an all-in-one computer, this week let’s revisit this topic and talk about the latest, the Gateway One.

The first all-in-one PC I ever had was by Panasonic and it was portable. Weighing in at a whopping 32 pounds, it had a build in printer, and it cost around $2,500 – and this was in the mid 80s which would have made it over $5,000 by today’s inflation. It had one of the very first flat panel displays and was colored both shades of orange. It even had a “turbo” button that, when pushed, would have still made it incredibly underpowered when compared to an average Smartphone today. But, it was easy to set up, looked kind of cool (for its time) and performed flawlessly for the 3 years I used it.
