FTC Stops Scareware Scam

Two companies – Innovative Marketing, Inc., which is incorporated in Belize and maintains offices in Kiev, Ukraine, and ByteHosting Internet Services, LLC from Cincinnati, OH – have been named in an FTC complaint relating to a scareware scam, and the body has obtained a temporary restraining order that effectively freezes their activities.

The FTC complaint alleges that the companies, “along with individuals Daniel Sundin, Sam Jain, Marc D’Souza, Kristy Ross, and James Reno, violated the FTC Act by misrepresenting that they conducted scans of consumers’ computers and detected a variety of security or privacy issues, including viruses, spyware, system errors, and pornography. The complaint also names a sixth individual, Maurice D’Souza, as a relief defendant who received proceeds from the scheme.”

Google Maps Gets Text Ads

Google Maps Gets Text Ads

It’s such a natural for search-related text ads that the amazing thing is that it hasn’t happened before. Google has added text ads to Google Maps.

CNET reports that some map search queries bring up a blue background text ad at the bottom of the page, while others don’t. It seems to depend on the search term being used. However, the service is new, and will certainly change in future as people bid for keywords.

DirecTV Inks Powerline Internet Deal

DirecTV Inks Powerline Internet Deal

Satellite television operator DirecTV has announced it has reached an agreement to offer subscribers high-speed Internet connectivity and voice telephone services using technology from the Current Group. And those Internet services will reach subscribers over electrical power lines, rather than telephone, DSL, fiber, wireless, or (ack!) cable technologies.

The initial service rollout is slated to begin in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and will expand out to cover more than 1.8 million homes and businesses “over the next several years.” As Current Group builds out its network of IP-over-powerline services, DirecTV will be able to offer broadband services over powerlines in additional areas.

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam

RadioShack Corporation announced today that it has begun offering MovieBeam’s set-top boxes at 1,700 retail locations in 331 mjor metropolitan areas where MovieBeam service is available.

At first glance, MovieBeam—backed by Disney, Cisco, Intel, and others—seems like a lot of other set-top box services offering on-demand, rental access to movies. And, indeed, the MovieLink boxes store up to 100 movies, and offer instant on-demand access to a frequently-updated selection of new releases and popular favorites from every major Hollywood studio. But instead of tapping into a user’s satellite, cable, or broadband Internet connection, MovieBeam downloads movies over the air using a special datacasting technology riding on airwaves alongside Public Broadcasting Systems signals. MovieBeam typically offers 100 movies at a time—all downloaded and stored locally on users’ systems for instant access—with 10 new titles delivered every week, including some high-definition selections.
