Sonic Solutions Buys CinemaNow

Sonic Solutions, which develops and distributes digital media software, has announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire digital movie distributor CinemaNow. The deal will rename CinemaNow as Sonic’s Premium Content Group and integrate it with Sonics Qflix team. Qflix technology enables users to burn copyright-protected movies to DVD discs, so long as they’re using QFlix-enabled drives and players, which are now available from Dell, Pioneer, and Plextor.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

DVR pioneer TiVo has inked a new agreement with CinemaNow that will make popular Disney films available to TiVo owners in standard definition for a $2.99 rental fee. Users will be able to rent a movie using another device—such as a PC or a mobile phone—and have the movie pushed to their TiVo DVR so it’s ready for immediate playback when users get home.

The new service will be introduced next week for owners of TiVo Series 2, Series 3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL set-top DVRs.

Digital movie download service CinemaNow has launched a . that enabled customers to view movie trailers on their mobile phones, as well as order movies to be watched later at home on their personal computers or televisions. The idea is to enable CinemaNow users to check out movies and make a rental or purchase decision when they’re away from home: when users purchase or rent a movie via the mobile service, it’s automatically downloaded to the user’s registered home PC or media center setup, and should be ready to watch by the time the user gets home.

Online digital video service CinemaNow has inked a deal with Macrovision intended to make it easier for device manufacturers to build support for CinemaNow’s services into products like digital television sets, network-attached storage, and set-top boxes. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“CinemaNow is dedicated to providing access to great entertainment wherever our customer is, in the living room or on the go,” said CinemaNow CEO Curt Marvis, in a statement. “Making sure our service is readily available on as many devices as possible is part of that mission, and that’s why we’re collaborating with Macrovision.”

CinemaNow, Universal Offer Same-Day Movies

Online movie download service CinemaNow has struck a deal with Universal Pictures to offer The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift the same day the movie is scheduled to hit retailers in DVD format—and CinemaNow customers will be able to burn the movie to standard DVD, with all features and bonus material, for just $9.99.

“Our customers will be the first to experience a major step forward in movies on the Internet: the ability to download a DVD from the comfort of home the same day the DVD becomes available via retail outlets,” said Bruce Eisen, CinemaNow President, in a release. “We remain committed to advancing the Burn to DVD format and Universal Pictures has joined us at the forefront of digital video distribution.”

CinemaNow Offers Download-To-Burn Movies

Online movie distributor CinemaNow may have scored a major win in the battle to sell legal copies of Hollywood movies online: the company’s just-announced Burn To DVD service enables customers to purchase and download movies via the Internet and burn them to standard DVD disks which can be used in portable players, everyday DVD players, laptops, computers, and other devices. And users don’t just get the movie: they get the entire commercial DVD release, complete with any extras, commentaries, interviews, deleted scenes, and more.

CinemaNow Bags Fox Films, TV Shows

Online movie service CinemaNow announced today that it will begin selling selected films and music from Fox Entertainment Group on a download-to-own basis through its Web site.

“We are thrilled to have the Fox family of movies and TV shows available on CinemaNow for download-to-own,” said Bruce Eisen, President of CinemaNow. “The addition of Fox to our roster of content partners is an important step for us, adding depth and strength to our customer offering.” CinemaNow’s acquisition of Fox content follows a series of recent deals for the digital video site, including arrangements to sell downloadable content from Warner Brothers and Disney. CinemaNow also carries content from Sony Pictures Entertainment and Lionsgate.

CinemaNow Nets Warner Brothers

Online movie download service CinemaNow, fresh off of their announcement yesterday about making Disney films available online the same day they’re released on DVD, was back at it again today as they unveiled a licensing agreement with Warner Brothers to offer select television shows and movies.

As part of this new agreement, said CinemaNow, pictures and television shows will be made available on a download-to-own basis, with all content copy protected by Microsoft’s digital rights management software. Television shows initially available, in either individual episodes or entire seasons, include Babylon5 and Dukes of Hazard, while motion pictures include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Matrix, and2001: A Space Odyssey. Movies available the same day as their DVD release will include Firewall on June 6th and 16 Blocks on June 13th.

CinemaNow to Sell Disney Movies Online

The Walt Disney Company has reached a deal with CinemaNow to sell digitial versions of its movies online on a download-to-own basis on the same day the films are released to DVD. Buyers will be able to transfer the films to three devices like laptops and portable media players, but will not be able to burn the films to standard DVD.

CinemaNow will kick off its Disney digital movie sales June 6 with the Glory Road baseball drama; Disney plans to offer both new and back-catalog titles via CinemaNow at prices basically equivalent to DVDs ($20 per film), with some older offerings discounted to near $10.

Movies To Be For Sale Online at DVD Release

Digital film distributors Movielink and CinemaNow have announced rental and download-to-own versions of major films from major Hollywood studios available the same day the films are released on DVD.

Movielink’s deal covers Paramount, Sony Pictures, MGM, Warner Bros., and Universal (not surprising, because they own Movielink) as well as Twentieth Century Fox. CinemaNow has signed agreements with Sony, MGM, and LionsGate Entertainment, which holds a large stake in CinemaNow. The services are currently only available to U.S. customers.
