Chief of Intel’s Biggest Division Heads to EMC

Chief of Intel

Intel Corp., the world’s biggest computer chip maker, said Monday that Pat Gelsinger, who ran Intel’s main division, and Bruce Sewell, Intel’s top lawyer, are leaving the company.

The departures appeared to catch Intel off guard. Gelsinger was scheduled to give a keynote speech next week at Intel’s developer forum in San Francisco but now is headed to data-storage company EMC Corp. Sewell has been Intel’s public face in its fight against allegations of antitrust abuse.

Intel revealed the resignations as it announced a big management restructuring in which three senior executives will assume more operational responsibilities, and CEO Paul Otellini will spend more time on corporate strategy.

Intel to Close Older Factories, Cut Jobs

Intel to Close Older Factories, Cut Jobs

Chipmaker Intel has announced it will be shutting down four older manufacturing plants in a move to restructure its operations. The impacted plants are assembly test facilities in Malaysia and the Philippines, as well as wafer production plants in Hillsboro, Oregon, and Santa Clara, California. Intel expects the closures will impact between 5,000 and 6,000 employees, although the company stresses they may not all leave Intel: some may be able to find positions at other manufacturing facilities.

The closures will not impact Intel’s 45- and 32-nanometer production facilities. For instance, the plant in Hillsboro, Oregon, focuses on 200nm technology. According to industry sources, the four plants have been operating at less than their full capacity for some time.

Living With the HTC Diamond: Closer but Not Yet an iPhone Killer

This last week I’ve been traveling throughout Japan and switching between the HTC Advantage I normally carry and the new HTC Touch Diamond that recently was released in Europe and will soon come to the US. Overall I’m impressed with this phone, but have realized that for me a touchscreen phone that doesn’t have a keyboard for email is simply too painful to use whether it is this new HTC product or the ever-popular Apple iPhone.

Sharp X-Series TVs Get Wireless HD

Last January, Sharp updated its LCD TV with a mammoth unveiling of 20 new sets, including new X-series that feature a slimmed-down bezel, offer a 15,000:1 contrast ratio, and 120 Hz refresh rates. When they were announced, Sharp said the X-series would be available with an optional wireless HD technology that would let users stream uncompressed HD content directly to the televisions, making for neat, cable-free installations. Now, Amimon has announced it is supplying the wireless HD solution for the X-series sets, with WHDI (wireless high-definition interface) specs that exceed Sharps’ initial proprietary wireless offering.

NVIDIA Steps Up GPU Offensive Against ATI

NVIDIA today announced the release of their latest trump card against arch rivals ATI, in the form of their GeForce 7800 GT GPU, the latest variant based upon NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 architecture and following on from the June 2005 release of NVIDIA’s GeForce 7800 GTX GPU solution.

Representing a lower price point solution based on NVIDIA’s latest GPU architecture, the GeForce 7800 GT GPU coming with a clock speed of 400MHz, features four less fragment units and one less vertex unit than the current flagship GeForce 7800 GTX GPU from NVIDIA.

Continuing with the recently launched tradition of ‘hard launches’, NVIDIA announced immediate availability of GeForce 7800 GT based solutions from add-in-card manufacturers and system integrators.

The new product is available in select replication facilities, with general availability expected in the second quarter. ”
