ClearPlay Debuts New Filtering DVD Player

ClearPlay Debuts New Filtering DVD Player

ClearPlay, a company which develops DVD player technology for filtering out "violence, profanity and other adult content," announced yesterday they were debuting a new DVD player for families. The ClearPlay CP-007 will be available for sale on the company’s Web site and also through Target for around $80.

ClearPlay, which at one time faced a lawsut because of its filtering technology, claims the pay-for service it offers benefits families by offering advanced parental controls. The technology is described as using "filters that are created specifically for each movie, allowing for frame-specific skips and mutes. The filtering is barely noticeable, and the resulting playback is smooth and effective. ClearPlay offers Filters for over 2200 top movies, and adds more every week when new DVDs are released."

RCA Stops Selling ClearPlay DVD Player

At the start of the year, Thomson introduced its RCA DRC232N DVD player with the ClearPlay parental-control feature as a product exclusive for the two national chains.

The system is said to strip out objectionable language and scenes from pre-recorded DVD movies, using a database maintained and marketed with a variety of subscription options by ClearPlay.

However, a Boca Raton, Fla.-based rival known as Nissim Corp. filed a patent infringement claim against ClearPlay on May 13. Nissim has developed a system called CustomPlay MediaCenter with parental control features.

ClearPlay’s CEO Bill Aho, could not be reached for comment.

Hollywood Sues ClearPlay Over DVD Player

ClearPlay’s groundbreaking DVD player, marketed by RCA, contains software that mutes foul language and skips graphic violence, sex and nudity in films. ClearPlay staffers, according to the company’s website, have screened hundreds of movies to identify the precise moments in a movie when objectionable elements occur, and monthly updates for new releases are provided for a modest fee.

ClearPlay claims the editing process is virtually unnoticeable, and is similar to an edited-for-TV version of the movies. “It’s as if you had super-fast fingers and were able to punch remote control buttons fast and accurately enough to skip and mute certain content, but still maintain the movie’s continuity and entertainment value!” the website said.
