Sony Plans PS3 folding@home Client

In a more which may mark a first for the video game industry, Sony announced last week it as has developed client software for the folding@home distributed computing project for its forthcoming PlayStation 3 gaming console. The folding@home project aims to understand the very complex processes of protein assembly, or “folding,” in living systems. Protein folding is critical to the survival of almost all creatures, and errors in protein folding are critical factors in a number of conditions and diseases, including Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Mad Cow, ALS< Huntington’s Disease, errors in bone growth, and many cancer-related conditions.

Plaxo Adds Mozilla Thunderbird Support

Plaxo, the Internet contact management service which synchronizes with your Outlook or Outlook Express mail client to store and update your contact database online, today announced they would begin full support of a third client. The new application to be supported is the open source Mozilla Thunderbird.

The current beta of the Plaxo Toolbar for Thunderbird, Plaxo said, will allow members of the service to synchronize their Thunberbird address book with the online Plaxo one. It will work much in the same way as the Outlook toolbar and can be downloaded here.

Motion Computing Launches M1400TC Tablet PC

It comes loaded with Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), Citrix IC Client and Microsoft Internet Explorer with the Sun Microsystems Java Runtime Environment. Because thin client computers do notstore data locally like traditional PCs, these applications connect the device to software managed and data stored on an organization’s network.

The Motion M1400TC Tablet Client uses the existing Motion M1400 slate tablet PC chassis and has many of the same features including its award-winning wide viewing angle display and an integrated fingerprint reader. The tablet’s traditional hard drive is replaced with 512MB solid-state flash storage, allowing storage only of the operating system and essential applications.

AOL Opens E-Mail Access to Third Parties

Subscribers of America Online may soon be free to choose their own preferred e-mail client, continuing a recent move by the company away from a single integrated client.

AOL is expanding an earlier beta test of a standalone dialer to include the capacity to use rich third party software to check member e-mail. The dialer is expected to ship as part of the forthcoming Tahiti upgrade to the AOL client, which is scheduled to ship early next year.

In the past, AOL’s rudimentary e-mail support epitomized a longstanding gripe of its subscribers: not having access to a decent mail client to manage their accounts.

New BF1942 Desert Combat beta

There is a new client, a new dedicated Windows server, and a new dedicated Linux server of the mod, with the update adding some new weapons and vehicles, including Harrier jump jets. The 542 MB client file is mirrored on 3D Downloads, Boomtown (registration required), FilePlanet (registration required), Filerush, and Gamer’s Hell.
