Comcast Testing Network Management Tech

Comcast Testing Network Management Tech

Earlier this week, the FCC made it official (PDF) and ordered U.S. cable operator Comcast to end discriminatory network management practices that deliberately blocked certain types of network use by its customers. In Comcast’s case, this means peer-to-peer file-sharing applications like BitTorrent and Gnutella; during periods of network congestion, last year Comcast was revealed by the Associated Press to be forging reset packets that would shut down customers’ fire-sharing sessions. After months of claims, counter-claims, spin control, and even attempts to stack FCC hearings in its favor, the FCC ruled Comcast’s “network management” practices violated FCC’s 2005 Internet Policy Statement (PDF) that essentially gives consumers the right to use any legal application and access any legal service they like. Network providers may engage in “reasonable,” transparent network management practices, but can’t just decide to shut down particular types of application traffic.

Computers to Match Human Reasoning by 2050?

At his keynote during the Intel Developer Forum this week in San Francisco, Intel’s chief technology officer Justin Ratter speculated that machines might catch up with human reasoning capabilities by the year 2050, and that Intel is already examining future human/machine interfaces and what improvements to machine reasoning and ability to sense the physical world might have in store for humanity.

“The industry has taken much greater strides than anyone ever imagined 40 years ago,” Rattner said. “There is speculation that we may be approaching an inflection point where the rate of technology advancements is accelerating at an exponential rate, and machines could even overtake humans in their ability to reason.”

Summer Storms Spur Electronics Warnings

Summer Storms Spur Electronics Warnings

Summer is reaching its height in the northern hemisphere, and with it has come another round of speculation whether cell phones—or Apple’s ubiquitous iPod media players—attract lightning. In 2005, a Canadian jogger was struck by lightning while listening to his iPod; the bolt threw him two and a half meters, ruptured his eardrums, and left him with a broken jaw and a Y-shaped burn on his neck and chest where electricity leapt up the earphone wires. Last year a Colorado teen suffered similar (though less severe) injuries when lightning struck nearby while he was mowing the lawn—and listening to Metallica on his iPod.

Spammer Settles with Microsoft for $7 Mln

Microsoft Corporation announced today it has reached a settlement with former self-proclaimed "spam king" Scott Richter and his Colorado company OptInRealBig, LLC, for some $7 million. The settlement is contingent on bankruptcy proceedings against the company being dismissed by a Denver court, but Microsoft says, after recovering its expenses from the case, it plans to re-invest all money from the settlement, including putting $5 million towards enhancing technical investigative support for law enforcement and $1 million to the state of New York, which also sued Richter in December, 2003.
