YouTube Bans Violent Videos

YouTube Bans Violent Videos

In recent months YouTube has come under increasing criticism from both the US and UK for the fact that it has violent videos that have been uploaded available. But that has now changed as the Google-owned site has updated its community guidelines to prohibit videos that “directly incite violence,” the Guardian reports.

There are two big changes in the community guidelines. One states:

"Graphic or gratuitous violence is not allowed. If your video shows someone getting hurt, attacked or humiliated, don’t post it."

The other says:

MySpace Launches in Japan

Leading online hangout—or, “lifestyle portal”—MySpace has announced MySpace KK, a 50-50 partership with Japan’s Softbank to launch MySpace Japan, a new online community exclusively for the Japanese market. To celebrate, MySpace Japan will host a free Secret Show on November 15, 2006, with Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and GEM for a semi-acoustic show just for local MySpace users.

“The launch of a Japanese community is a huge step for MySpace’s international expansion,” said Chris DeWolfe, MySpace CEOK. “We’re responding to user demand by creating a community that is localized in terms of language and culture while connecting members to the rest of MySpace’s global network.”

Xbox Live Tops 2 Million Users

Microsoft’s Xbox group must be very happy campers right now as their latest numbers on membership of Xbox Live show strong growth over the last year. The size of the community, Microsoft says, has effectively doubled to 2 million users. This is the estimated equivalent of one new member every 30 seconds.

The computer giant, according to a press release, equates this exponential growth largely to a growing library of videogame titles that deliver online experiences, the availability of more downloadable content for extended game play experiences and an already active online community.

Valve Software Thieves Captured

“Now, these people were caught not because of the brilliance of law enforcement, or the stupidity of their actions, as is so common with some criminals, but because they picked on the wrong community.

I use the word community very advisedly, mainly because it seems like it was the community that brought them down. If you pick on an unloved loner, or an antisocial entity, chances are that you will get away with it. Pick on something that has a long running, close knit, and rather rabid following, and you have problem. Look to SCO for an example.”

Half-Life 2 Code Thieves Nabbed

Arrests have been made in several countries related to the break-in to Valve’s network, theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, and release of the source code on the Internet, the company said.

“Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved,” said Gabe Newell, Valve’s CEO. “It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime.”

China upgrades DVD to evade licensing fees

spokesman for the community said it was hoped the new audio and video device, EVD or enhanced versatile disk, would attack the market share of DVD, or digital video disk.

Funded by the government, major Chinese manufacturers initiated research to develop EVD in 1999.

Beijing E-world Technology Co., Ltd., a window company of the community, said that it has already overcome all difficulties from primary development, chip designing and industrialization.

The community applied 25 patents for the EVD technologies, with seven being granted patents. Some 40 more patent applications are also in the pipeline.

UT2003 Community Bonus Pack

Here’s the deal on the 142 MB (Umod) or 130 MB (zipped) pack: “This compilation began as a small project. A few of the Unreal community’s best level designers got together to release a small pack of their best work to the community. As the time went on, the project grew into something far more significant, with more and more of the best Unreal talent out there joining the team. The map count went from a small handful to a fully-fledged professional-level bonus pack. With all this pack now complete, the team has decided to work on a number of future projects together to produce high quality work that will get noticed throughout the design community.”
