Hardware, electronics, and optics manufacturer Ricoh has apparently developed a new optical component which can read all optical disk formats—CD, DVD, Blu-ray, and HD-DVD—and plans to offer it to OEM manufacturers by the end of 2006. But Ricoh doesn’t plan to stop there: with the addition of a more-powerful laser, they plan to offer a component which can also write all optical disk formats. Ricoh plans to show the component this week at Tokyo’s International Optoelectronics Exhibition ‘06.

Lexicon Debuts MC-12 HD Media Controller
Lexicon’s new MC-12 HD is based on their flagship MC-12 Digital Controller and puts a large focus on high-definition by including 6 HDMI, one HDMI output with on-screen display, and upconversionof composite and S-Video inputs to component video output. Also integrated in the MC-12 HD is a broadcast-quality analog video switcher with up-conversion to component video. The componentvideo switcher accepts analog component video signals, including all HDTV signals. The MC-12 HD is a reference-quality, 12-channel digitalcontroller with built-in digital audio processing, 12 configurable inputs and 3 zones.

ViewSonic said the new component was designed to complement its line of digital projectors and advanced LCD, plasma and rear-projection displays. The HD10, which carries a $399 suggested retail price, is compatible with any display that features component, composite or S-video inputs, and will tune in NTSC VHF, UHF and all 18 ATSC signal formats.
Additionally, Dolby Digital and MPEG audio decoding is included in the set-top box, as well as picture-in-picture support.
Output formats include 720 by 480i, 720 by 480p, 1,280 by 720p, and 1,920 by 1,080i.
