Lenovo’s IdeaPad U110 Barely Tips Scales

Lenovo

Lenovo rounded out its new IdeaPad family of consumer notebooks on Tuesday with an 11-inch kid sister to join its larger 15.4-inch and 17-inch offerings. The tiny IdeaPad U110 will serve as the most mobile computer in the line, and also the priciest.

Making weight a priority, Lenovo has kept the U110 to less than 2.5 pounds with the standard four-cell battery. To make the most of such a tiny 11-inch form factor, the notebook’s screen sports a frameless design, as well as a viewing angle Lenovo claims is “infinite-like.” The U110’s textured metal lid can be finished in either black or red.

TigerDirect Buying CompUSA Assets

Fans of old-school technology retailing may rejoice: the CompUSA brand may be changing, but it’s not going away. As word broke in late 2007 that the venerable computer retailer CompUSA would be closing its remaining retail stores and, essentially, holding a fire sale on anything left on the shelves, some technology enthusiasts rejoices (whoo hoo! Longer lines at Best Buy, Fry’s, and Circuit City!) but others lamented the loss of a well-known brand, where you could always go for a motherboard at two in the morning. And stop for some fries nearby.

CompUSA Shutting Down After Holidays

CompUSA Shutting Down After Holidays

It’s the end of a retail era: after 23 years, computer and electronics seller CompUSA has been sold to Gordon Brothers Group LLC, a global restructuring company that specializes in carving up companies and selling off their assets. Although CompUSA’s current 103 locations will remain open for business through the end-of-year holiday season, CompUSa will wind down after that, shuttering retail operations and selling off stores and service businesses. Financial terms of the takeover were not disclosed; CompUSA will be run by Gordon Brothers principal Bill Weinstein, although current CompUSA CEO Ramon Ross will stay in an executive advisory capacity during the shutdown.

Acer Gets Notebooks Into Best Buy

Acer Gets Notebooks Into Best Buy

Taiwanese computer maker Acer is looking to expand its sales in the U.S. market through a new partnership with leading electronics retailer Best Buy. The first fruits: a series of inexpensive notebook computers targeting the low-budget and entry level computer market.

Currently, Best Buy is offering five Acer notebook systems (one of which it claims is already sold out) ranging from $500 to $850; at the high end, the Acer Aspire AS5610-4537 offers an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 15.4-inch LCD display, 1 GB of RAM, dual layer DVD burner and WIndows Vista Home Premium.

Best Buy to Eliminate Rebates

“In response to customer complaints, Best Buy Co. Inc., the world’s largest electronics retailer, promised Friday to eliminate mail-in rebates within two years. Best Buy’s rivals, including CircuitCity Stores and CompUSA, are expected to follow suit.

“Our customers are telling us they just hate the process,” said Ron Boire, executive vice president and general merchandise manager at Best Buy.”

We love to hear this, but the question is whether customers will still get discounts on the products they pay for. Will the savings you would get from a rebate still be passed on in one form or another?

CompUSA To Sell ParkerVision SignalMAX

SignalMAX wireless routers for use with cable and DSL modems, WLAN cards for notebooks, and USB adapters for PC desktops enable wireless networking and Internet connectivity without the distance and dead-zone limitations of conventional WiFi products. SignalMAX products are based on ParkerVision’s Direct2Data wireless RF technology. CompUSA will also be selling SignalMAX products through their Business Services organization, which targets small and medium size businesses and their website at www.compusa.com.

Gateway Desktops To Be Sold At CompUSA

Gateway, Inc. today announced that CompUSA, Inc., the nation’s second-largest retailer of PCs, will begin selling Gateway-branded desktops later this week.

The systems will be sold across CompUSA’s retail network of 226 stores nationwide and through the company’s web site.

The availability of Gateway PCs at major retailers — in addition to Gateway’s traditional direct channels of web and phone — follows the closure of its 188 retail stores in April.  Gateway adopted this strategy following its merger in March with eMachines, Inc., whose eMachines-branded products are sold through major retailers in the U.S., Japan and the UK.

CompUSA Gives D-Link Network Vendor Award

From D-Link’s press release:

Besting over five other networking solutions vendors, D-Link and its expansive line of consumer and small business networking products triumphed as the sole winner for the competitive category.

“By consistently supporting CompUSA with high-quality products and services year after year, D-Link has demonstrated a strong commitment to partnership and to growing our mutual businesses,” said Gary Bale, CompUSA Vice President of Merchandising. “D-Link continues to be a market leader in its categories and a role model for the networking industry.”
