Internet Explorer 8: One Step Forward, Three Steps Back

It seems that only yesterday, Internet Explorer was a clunky abomination of a browser that lagged behind its competition in all features, crashed constantly, and was generally frowned upon by anyone with the knowhow to download something better. Seeing as the latest version, Internet Explorer 8, was just released yesterday, that embarrassing recollection of failure literally was last week.

GE Launches SmartCommand Home Control Panel

GE Launches SmartCommand Home Control Panel

General Electric’s lesser-known security branch, GE Security, formally launched a new home automation system on Monday, which lives up to GE’s environmentally friend “ecomagination” bent by helping consumers get a handle on utilities, among other things. The SmartCommand control center rolls controls for HVAC, lighting, security, home theater and more into a single touch-screen panel.

The 7.8-inch LCD screen displays a touch-based graphical user interface, allowing homeowners to turn down the heat, dim lights, and even adjust the volume of a stereo with the press of a finger. It serves as the central control center for GE’s SmartCommand line of home automation products, such as the SmartCommand Thermostat. The device can also tie into GE’s other home offerings, including the Concord 4 and NetworkX security system, and it supports standard Universal Power Bus lighting controls.

Honeywell Sues 34 Companies Over LCD Patent

Honeywell has filed a lawsuit against 34 electronics companies claiming infringement of a Honeywell patent for technology that increases the brightness of images and that reduces the appearance of certain interference effects on a liquid crystal display (LCD).

Honeywell’s lawsuit claims the company’s patented technology is being used in a variety of consumer electronics products, including notebook computers, cell phones, personal digital assistants, portable DVD players, portable LCD TVs, video game systems, and digital still cameras.

“Honeywell invests millions of dollars in research and development every year, and we aggressively defend our intellectual property to protect that substantial investment,” said John Donofrio, Vice President of Intellectual Property at Honeywell.

Concord Camera Demos WiFi Technology

Concord will showcase the new WIT technology through a standalone prototype, a pocket-sized 2″ x 2″ WIT-enabled Wi-Fi device which plugs into a camera’s USB port allowing photos to be transmitted wirelessly over the Internet from Concord digital cameras, as well as other cameras utilizing mass storage technology. WIT technology transmits using the 802.11b standard for compatibility with all Wi-Fi hot spots and base stations, as well as using the 802.11g standard to take advantage of the latest and fastest Wi-Fi transmission technology. It is about 1500 times faster than traditional GSM (GPRS) networks today, and will be 20 times faster than mobile 3G networks. WIT enables users to transmit a high quality 4 Megapixel image at 1/10th of a second, and video clips at up to 54MB per second. WIT transmits images by e-mail or FTP with the help of a WI-FI access point or Hotspot.

Concord Eye-Q Go Wireless Camera Review

Quote from the review at Designtechnica:

“As far as 2.0 Megapixel cameras go, the Concord Eye-Q Go Wireless was average at best. Its ability to transfer images over Bluetooth, while a nice novelty, served no great purpose unless you have a cellular phone or PDA which is Bluetooth-enabled. In this circumstance, it holds higher value in that it saves you the step of cutting out the computer as the middleman while you are shuffling JPEGs from machine to machine.

Other things also distract from the Concord’s ability to be a high quality camera. The body, as mentioned before, doesn’t feel that solid and the picture quality is not that stellar.

Concord DV2020 Compact 5-in-1 Multi-Camera

The Concord DV2020 features a 2 Megapixel digital still camera with 2X digital zoom, digital video camera with 4X digital zoom and MPEG-4 compression, PC Cam with instant PC video playing/recording capability, digital voice recorder, and MP3 player – all in one.

The Concord DV2020 was designed with the video photographer and digital photo taking enthusiast in mind. Encased in a sleek aluminum body, the camera’s familiar ‘video camera’ shape and 270(degree) adjustable LCD make it comfortable for videographers to take video from any position, whether on the ground or above the head. The high quality 1.5″ LTPS LCD is 117k pixels providing a higher LCD quality than the standard digital camera that has an 80k pixel LCD.
