Microsoft Rolls Out Red Carpets for Beatles, Other Stars at E3

Microsoft Rolls Out Red Carpets for Beatles, Other Stars at E3

True to rumor, there was no shortage of star power at Microsoft’s wiz-bang press conference this year – a return to form for the conference that has been so played down in recent years. Microsoft managed to round up Tony Hawk, Steven Spielberg and no lesser celebrities than the surviving Beatles themselves for its Monday morning press conference.

After debuting the cinematic trailer for the Beatles Rock Band and announcing a handful of the songs to be included, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr both bounced out from back stage on queue. Neither seemed to know quite what to say. “The game is good, the graphics are very good, and we were great,” Ringo joked. They stuck around for only a minute, wise cracking and paling around, before disappearing backstage again.

Privacy Conference Aims to Prevent Stalking

While most of us seek Internet privacy for simple peace of mind, for some people it can be a matter of protecting themselves from serious harm. The Safety Net Project announced Friday that it would host a three-day conference in New Orleans to address the privacy issues confronting victims of domestic abuse on the Internet.

According to the Project’s release, technology can be helpful to women in abusive relations for finding support and information, but it can also leave electronic clues for estranged lovers to follow. The conference, entitled, “The Use of Technology in Intimate Partner Stalking” teaches local hotline operators, police, prosecutors and shelter managers how to instruct survivors on the discrete and effective use of technology.

Yahoo Messenger Gets Conference Calling

Yahoo and announced today that Yahoo Messenger with Voice (available for Windows) will offer ConFreeCall, a free downloadable conference call capability from Vapps. The service will enable Yahoo Messenger users to conduct free group conference calls in addition to Yahoo Messenger’s existing text, voice, and photo-sharing services. ConFreeCall will be available from the beta Yahoo Messenger plug-in gallery or from Vapps directly.

Vapps (short for "Voice over Internet Applications") says the service can handle up to 500 simultaneous participants per call—assuming tons of bandwidth all around, or course. Call moderators can control call volume and announce participants. Other features include announcing recording status, muting and unmuting participants, and controlling access to the conference line.

Internet Explorer Due This Summer

“Contrary to expectations, Microsoft will continue to offer its anti-spyware tool for free and will revamp Internet Explorer sooner rather than later, company chairman Bill Gates said Tuesday in a keynote speech at the RSA Conference.

“Blocking and scanning of spyware should be available to every Windows system,” Gates said at the in San Francisco security conference, which opened Monday and runs through Friday. ”

It was our belief that IE 7 would come out with LongHorn, but it looks like it will be available before then, sometime this summer.

Atari Attacks Sony Over Lack Of PSP details

Speaking at a conference arranged by US financial group Piper Jaffrey earlier this week, Bonnell was outspoken in his criticism of Sony’s positioning of the forthcoming device – arguing that there’s simply not enough information available for publishers to make educated decisions about it.

“We saw pictures and a nice prototype at E3, but I want to see more,” he told the audience at the conference. “Yeah, it’s cool – it’s nice, like a nice car. But we have no idea if the PSP pricing is going to be $250, $350 or $500.”
