The competition for who will set the standard for logging into social networking services (and the widgets and applications they support) is starting to heat up, with Google launching a public beta of its Friend Connect service just as Facebook throws open the doors of its own Facebook Connect service.

Google Friend Connect Harnesses OpenSocial

Though rumors of a Google social platform has swirled for months, the specifics of the tech giant’s approach to social networking have been vague and unconfirmed up until Monday, when Google formally announced the service’s launch. Google Friend Connect will serve as a flexible social networking app that can be customized and built into any site easily, allowing visitors to interact without hosts dealing with the massive backend usually required to support a social network.

AT&T Makeover Includes Web Services

AT&T WebService Connect allows different applications from different sources to communicate without time-consuming custom coding. And because it is XML-based, it’s not tied to any one operating system or programming language.

Developed over the last year with partner Grand Central Communications, WebService Connect plays into AT&T broader strategy of evolving from a long-distance phone company to a provider of enterprise network services.
