Ancient Rome Comes To Life Digitally

Have you ever had the wild desire to experience ancient Rome? Thanks to a project called Rome Reborn, you might just have the chance. The Rome of 320 A.D., when the city was at the zenith of its power, has been digitally recreated in 3D.   The massive undertaking comes from the Virginia Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. It’s been 10 years in the making, using scans of the Plastico di Roma Antica model kept at Rome’s Museum of Roman Civilisation.   More than 7,000 buildings in the model were scanned and digitally reproduced, while archaeologists offered advice on how statues would have looked in the period. Additionally, maps of Rome at the time were used to reconstruct houses, apartment buildings and even brothels.   More than that, the interiors of some 30 buildings have been recreated, including the Senate (right down to frescoes on the walls) and the Colosseum, allowing virtual tours.   In 320 A.D, Rome was under the rule of the Emperor Constantine, a massive city with over a million inhabitants, and arguably at the height of its power, the center of an empire that ranged from Britain to Asia Minor.   However appealing a digital ancient Rome might be, you won’t be able to buy it. It will be used by scholars to study the city and the period.   “This is the first step in the creation of a virtual time machine, which our children and grandchildren will use to study the history of Rome and many other great cities around the world,” announced Bernard Frischer of the Virginia Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities. However, the Institute has begun talk with Linden Labs which might make the complete digital ancient Rome available on Second Life. And that would make quite a world to explore.

Toshiba HD DVD Players Get $100 Rebate

In its continuing battle with Sony’s Blu-ray high-definition disc format, HD DVD founder Toshiba has launched two new limited time promotions to generate some excitement (and market share numbers) for the HD DVD format. First, the company is extending its “five free HD DVDs” promotion through July 31, letting consumers receive five free HD DVD titles (from a short list of 15) for free with the purchase of a Toshiba HD DVD player. Second—and new to the game—Toshiba is offering a $100 in-store rebates on selected Toshiba HD DVD players, bringing the final cost of some players below the magical $300 threshold.

Constantine Gets Special HD DVD Treatment

Warner Home Video today said on June 6 they would be debuting their first HD DVD movie title with a higher degree of interactivity. Constantine will be available for $28.99 and will also be joined on that day by The Perfect Storm for the same price and Firewall for $39.99.

In Constantine, said Warner Home Video, HD DVD viewers will gain the ability to enjoy an “In-Movie Experience” (IME) interactive feature which lets them enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other bonus material while the movie is running. The IME for this movie features director Francis Lawrence leading an exploration of the plot, stunts, characters and production.

Three Warner HD DVD Titles Due April 18

Hey, guess what? When Toshiba starts selling the first HD DVD players March 28, absolutely no HD DVD content will be available.

Instead, technology enthusiasts will have to wait three weeks, until April 19, to purchase Warner Home Video’s first three HD DVD titles: Million Dollar Baby,The Phantom of the Opera, and The Last Samurai. The titles will carry an MSRP of $28.99.

Warner Bros. attributes the delay to technical issues getting up and running with the HD DVD encoding and manufacturing process, emphasizing it wants to get everything right in its initial releases.
