News Corp. Angling for Form Consortium for Paid Web News?

A few months ago, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. made headlines by announcing it was planning to start charging users to read online versions of the company’s newspaper properties, by putting portions of its content behind so-called “paywalls” that could only be accessed by paid subscribers. Now, The Los Angeles Times reports that News Corp has been meeting with other news publishers with an eye towards forming a consortium to charge for online news access.

Although my measures still indicate MySpace is the largest social networking site in the United States, it’s no secret that the service has been losing ground to FaceBook, which may still ag behind in the United States but has already surpassed MySpace worldwide in terms of its total usership, and is also experiencing faster growth. Now, MySpace’s parent company News Corp. has announced that "by mutual agreement" MySpace co-founder Chris DeWolfe will not be renewing his contract and will leave the CEO position "in the near future."

Xbox 360 to be Backwards Compatible

Kyocera to Outsource 80% Phone Production

“Kyocera Corp. has decided to outsource production of its CDMA handsets for the North American market to Flextronics International Ltd. As part of the plan, Kyocera Wireless Corp. (KWC), a Kyocera group company in the US, will sell its mobile phone manufacturing equipment and inventory in Mexico to Flextronics. The outsourcing of the production will enable KWC to focus more intently on R&D, design, sales and marketing. ”

CEOs Want Their HDTV

“Continuing failure to bring the DTV transition to an end will adversely impact our economy, our public safety and our position as a global innovation leader,” the CEOs wrote under the auspices of the Computer Systems Policy Project.

“We urge you to establish in law a firm and binding date certain for completing the DTV transition as soon as possible,” the CEOs told the lawmakers, according to a copy of the letter mailed on Tuesday that was obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

HD-DVD’s That Play On Regular DVD Players

” Toshiba Corp. and Memory-Tech Corp. said their disc has a dual-layered surface that can store both types of data on the same side.

For consumers, that would eliminate the potential headache of having to own two types of DVD players: Both will be able to read such discs, though only the newer equipment can take advantage of the higher-resolution technology.

The discs, which took six months to develop, will be able to hold 4.7 GB in the current format and 15 GB in high resolution, Memory-Tech spokesman Masato Otsuka said. “

IBM Supercomputer Again Claims Record

“IBM Corp.’s still-incomplete Blue Gene/L system, which will be installed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, achieved a sustained performance of 70.72 trillion calculations per second using a standard test program, the Department of Energy said Thursday.

The world’s current official leader, Japan’s Earth Simulator, can sustain 35.86 trillion calculations per second using the same software. “

Intel Cancels LCOS Chip Plans

“The move may be the latest indication that LCOS is not as easy as it seemed. Both Toshiba and Thomson have pulled out of manufacturing their own LCOS TV sets. A partnership between LCOS chip manufacturer Brillian Corp. and Sears fell through, and rival MicroDisplay Corp. has signed up just one customer. Sony, however, recently said it would introduce the Qualia 006 70-inch rear-projection display next year for under $10,000, based on a proprietary LCOS technology called SXRD (Silicon X-tal Reflective Display). “

Pentax Expands Digital SLR Camera Line

Pentax Corp plans to introduce this fall a SLR (single-lens reflex) digital camera aimed at general consumers that will retail for a little more than 100,000 yen (~$915 USD). Monthly production will be set at about 20,000 units, and the company intends to ship about 100,000 units by March 31, 2005.

Movie Studios Sue Retailer For Piracy

The lawsuit, filed in New York by Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp. and Paramount Pictures Corp., marks the first time a movie company has sued a retailer of the forbidden software by 321 Studios Inc.
